my car is cursed, I'm pretty sure it's my shifter now, totally broken. I was driving along and came up to a light, some guy pulls up beside me in a jeep giving me a look, and I'm like "yeah right." Well he actually thought he could and he slammed the gas off the line, he had me by a half car for about a second (mainly cuz I thought he was joking) then I just tore him a new one, but one I put it into third I noticed third was a lot further than it should be, then I noticed I can shift at all, then there are no gears and the shifter just moves around, so I coast into a parking lot where it stalls cuz it was in a stuck in a gear (I couldn't even put it into neutral!). I'm pretty sure the shifter is finished and not the tranny, so i was wondering...how much does the stock shifter cost? is a B&M worth it? and is this something that can be fixed by an amateur (me)?

I wonder what will happen next?

i bet its the internals of the shifter, after rebuilding ryan's with him on the weekend, our shifters are cheap and brake easy, there is 2 plastic main housings that support just about everything

buy the shifter rebuild kit from ed very well worth it
but dont buy it before i do, something i need to do also :p

Ed said he will have more in tomorrow

and its simple, comes with a procedure on replacing it
it takes longer to get **** off to get to the shifter then it does actually fixing it

alright well I pulled it all apart and what a mess. here's a pic of the shifter.

the 2 arrows point to screw holes but there was no screws in them when I pulled it all apart, obviously bad!

the 2 circles point to 2 things that look like bolts but they seem like they are gonna be impossible to get the off, any help?

I've never seen it that bad,
dont drive the car, some of those bits can get down into the tranny, and im sure you dont want to have to buy a new tranny,

you see the 4, 10mm bolt heads just below that?
you need to remove those

then that whole unit should come out

I couldn't drive it if I wanted to. I have the 4 bolts that hold the shifter down off but there seems there are 2 more on a little plate (circled) that need to come off, they look impossible to get at.

Just light tap on the shifter housing will make it pop of. The rebuild kit is very sweeeeeet. I passed on the B&M, some members had given me the heads up, saying it will put more strain on the tranny. If you do get the rebuild kit, you WILL love it.

your right ryan, it just popped off...looks like shifter kit for me! more money into this damn thing.

but like my buddy says "if something breaks just replace it with something better" although he took it to the extreme, he broke a timing belt in his 4 cyl mustang and replace it with a 5.0!

well I pulled it all apart and got some new screws to replace the ones that were gone and put it back in. The shifter feels brand new without a rebuild kit. it feels amazing...click, click, click, vrooom

Similar experience to yours. On way home from work 4 weeks ago in my 90 SC, stopped at a stop sign. Car popped out of first gear at takeoff, then would NOT shift into any gear. As i was sitting in the middle of a busy state route by now, i began to jam to get the car in gear to get it off the road, finally went in, drove it home without any problem, then shifter began to thump, you could feel it going down the road if you laid your hand on the shift knob. Took it to the shop, my mechanic was going to put a scope through the drain plug hole in the tranny, could not get the scope in the hole, discovered a billion chunks of gear pieces in the pan. been looking for a new, used, rebuilt tranny since, finally found 1 in Virginia, used, no warranty and will cost me 1500 to buy it and have it put in. You might take it to a mechanic that will put the scope up in the tranny pan, so you can be sure before you buy something you may not need to try fixing it. Best of luck!
