Ok, I have a 6.5" sub in a box that barely fits it, like literally barely fits it.

So my question is, will I get more bass out of it ported or sealed. How big to port if I should port. I realise I am not going to be getting stellar bass out of this, but In a reg cab pickup, its really ALL I could fit without losing the ability to slide the seat all the way back!

Thanks!

a sealed box has the smoothest rolloff and transient response. i cant tell you how big a ported box has to be for your application but size of the box as well as the port is critical in a ported box. port a too small box or have an oversized port and you lose bass. a sealed box does not have to a square or anything similar to that. its all about internal volume. building or modding a sealed box is much easier to do and will not really affect performance if you mildly goof on internal volume. ported boxes do play much lower than a sealed box if compared to 2 exact setups in the same car. but sealed boxes have better cone control anyway and are easier to make.

Is there anything else in the box? Lining the box with insulation, or polyfill stuffing can help a small box "act" a little bigger.

I suggest trying to find a website with more specs for your particular sub. That will help in deciding what you should do.

A ported box will be louder but not as clear. A sealed box is the way to go for clarity. No idea how big the port should be

Like I said the box just barely fits the sub in it....

Im going to try the poly fill idea.

Other than that, if I just extend off either side with some 2" PVC pipe that is capped at the end, would that work for expanding the volume? im not really sure if thats a valid idea or not.

thanks guys.

About the poly. If that box is as small as you say, be carefull that none of it will be resting against the speaker cone. You just need to break up the hard flat surface of the inside of the box.

On the tubes, that COULD work, but I think you would have to be REALLY lucky to pull off putting something like that together and having it sound OK. If you run through the calculations, it would probably take a LOT of tube to make a substantial increase in volume. I would also be worried about some sort of resonance setting up in the tube...

Is there no wat to make the box longer, or taller?
