Just thought I'd let you guys know that I made it home to St. Louis without any major problems. Despite all of the rain in Florida last week, we were pretty lucky and it only interferred with our plans for a total of about 5 hours.
As for the problems/observations, well here goes:
1) When killing a gnat (or any other insect) on the inside of the windshield in the hot sun, be sure not to hit your hand near a small cluster of rock chips. Anyway, I barely (and I mean barely) bumped the windshield to smash the gnat and I had to look thru a couple of cracks the whole drive home. And I didn't even flatten the gnat, but he did die.
2) If you accidently leave an A/C gauge adapter on the hig-pressure line when recharging the A/C, don't leave it there just because you have a cap for it but not a cap for the fitting. The adapter managed to loosen itself up during my long drive home and I didn't have A/C for the last 4 hours of my drive--it was 85º or more. It was quite obvious that the freon leaked out at the adapter.
3) Fix bent wheels/tire problems before attempting a 3k mile trip.
Here are the stats:
3106 miles
172 gals premium
$1.61 avg price/gal
18.1 mpg (with 3.73's and non-lockup convertor)
PS Bryan: check your pm
