New hope for old cranks, SC crankshafts that is.

Some of us old cranks got no hope but that's another story. I just got one of my spare cranks back from Crankshaft Specialist in Memphis, 901-452-6663. It was worn down .005 due to headgasket failure. I got it for nothing due to the damage and spent $38 to get it checked and measured here locally. I paid $575 to get it hard chromed and reground to original specs. I think they normally charge $750 but I worked a deal thru one of the racing event vendors I buy from. This is all these people do is build and rework racing cranks. I was told that this chrome process will make the crank as strong or stronger than original. I could have gotten it stroked but didn't think of it in time. I asked about an additional nitriding that they offer but was told it is already stronger than nitriding would offer. This is a cold chemical plating process so it doesn't stress the crank and leave it susceptable to breaking. I don't know what it costs to get one turned down .010 but at least here you can put some power to it without danger of it breaking. Since you can't buy a new one this is a good alternative.

Yep, must have used them a dozen or so times myself.
They do Top Notch work!
You should have seen some of the cranks they fixed for me.:)

How difficult is it to balance the crank or clearance the journals one this "chrome" has been applied?

It's machined to the original spec so a standard bearing is used all the way around. They claim that the clearances would be more towards the loose side than tight side but to preassemble and check before final assembly. There is a tape that is pressure sensitive and flattens out when compressed so you can easily measure the exact clearance.
