Can we get a roll call for night drags at fontana ?

I may not be able to make it. I found a leak in my power steering and wasn't able to fix my exhaust leak this weekend. I am going to do my best to make it though. If not this time, then maybe next.

Sorry to hear that. Whats stopping you from fixing the problem --parts ?

I'm pretty buried with moving and getting things sorted out and put back together.
Plus, it's kinda' depressing without an SC for the meet. :(

Haven't had time to find leak in PS and exhaust leak is just going to be a pain. I also have headers I want to put on so fixing leak seems to be kind of a waste. I have to rebuild exhaust with headers and that takes money, which I have none. I am also kind of paranoid running my car being as broke as I am. I WILL do it soon though. I did finally get car smogged and registered, it's been almost two years since car was registered. Nice to drive without have to look in rear view mirror most of time.

Chances are looking slim Carlos...gee never thought I'd ever use slim and Carlos in the same sentence *rimshot* HEYO!!! :D
Car's been running warmer than I'd like it, probably due to the tripple digit heat we've been getting. Couple that to the fact that its not really cooling down THAT much at night and the elevation at Fontana and I got myself some more 15 second runs
Wait it out for a cool saturday at Carlos-malo again...thats Carls-bad for you paler faced folks lol

I have the leaking power steering problem, the starter that just began acting up this weekend, the pass side window motor that ate ***** when I tried to roll it down in the 107 deg heat, and my car is running hot as hell.
Al, my temp gauge sits around the middle in the morning, but on my way home it is between the "m" in "norm" and the "H". Is this what yours is doing? It is worrying me that it is running too hot.
I hate my SC  (right now)

Mine doesnt go up THAT high unless I am on a hill. I have a feeling that if I install the air dam plastic clip thinggie from the pontiacs and relocated my huge a$s tranny cooler from the front of the radiator to under my battery with a puller fan, that it would run a lot cooler.

Well, sorry to hear the bad news. We dont have to goto the drag strip, werent we talking about some type of bbq ?
Hey al, you were being pretty quick on the draw with that last joke.
(now those are two words that dont normally follow one another.. quick and al )

Some girls don't like it quick Carlos
Kris is supposed to get back at us with the details of the bbq thinggie.

Yeah, the bbq in Corona would be cool.
Al, mine is like that driving down the freeway at 80 mph at around 5pm. Any suggestions? I have a new water pump, new radiator, newly rebuilt block, etc. I don't have any obstrucitons that I can see. I did find out that my heater core is leaking enough to constantly drip on the pass. floor board :( That's not going to be fun to replace.

Blocked or malfunctioning thermostat??? Have you tried cutting pin 14 on IRCM or unplugging the ac compressor and turning the ac on to see if your fans are coming on??? If all else fails, get an aftermarket temp gage and see what the REAL temperature is instead of saying "my car runs at r-m" :D Does the car run colder at lower speeds like mine???

hey guys, well since it looks like fontana is out, i'll talk to my roommate tonight to make sure it's still cool for us to crash their house. i'll be back and let you guys know tonight. also, how's the head count looking for having a bbq and hanging out?

Hey Al, I put a new t-stat in it also. To hook up a mech gauge, can I use the same sender or do I have to get a different one? I have a couple methods I could use to get temps on the outside of the t-stat housing such as a contact thermocouple or laser thermometer (Ranger type unit). I will check to see what the temp is. If I recall, aren't the t-stats in these 160's or are they 180's?
It runs hotter at low speeds, but just a bit. When should the fan come on? The fan kicks up when I do an EEC test, but other than that I don't think it is coming on.
Also, my A/C does not work (on purpose, don't want to refill it with r-12 $$$$$$)
What does "Have you tried cutting pin 14 on IRCM" mean????

Means to cut the #14 wire on the little black box behind the passenger side headlight housing. If you cut it, it turns the low speed fan on full time until the connection is restored (dont leave it like that unless your fan is relatively new, makes for a pretty cool electrical fire. Do a search for the "cool fan mod" on the tech. There are tons of ways to do this.
Stock t stat is 195º i got 160º on mine, had nothing in there for a while but thats not good. Other than that, beats me dude, but this heat is pissing me off!!!

Are you using "Water Wetter"? Many guys use it, including Mike. That will help keep temps down, tho it does sound like there may be another issue.
How have you disabled the A/C?

Oh man, I am in trouble by Lee again. :D I didn't do anything to disable the A/C, I just didn't refill it with R-12. It has ref. oil in it. The belt is still on it, but I figured as long as the a/c isn't on, the clutch isn't engaged and it is not acting like parasitic drag (not a significant amount right).
I am not using watter wetter, but I will. I am currently running a 50/50 mix of long life coolant and water. I will investigate the fan mod issue that Alex brought up.
The temp this morning sat dead in the middle on the freeway but heated up on the slower surface streets. It will heat up on the freeway in the afternoon though because of these damn temps. I agree Alex, enough with the heat.

Erich,
Unplug your a/c compressor and turn the ac on. It should turn on your low speed fan and help with the overheating on surface streets, at least for the meanwhile. If it doesnt turn on, then there is an issue with your fan.

Al, I unpluged my A/C comp and then turned the a/c on, nothing happened. No fan at all. I drove it home and checked the temp, it was at 220-230 deg at the t-stat housing. Still no fan was on. The last time I pulled codes, the fan kicks on when it is going thru its relay checks. Anyway to decisively check the fan? Thanks.
Man it's hot in my car! No A/C, the engine compartment feels like it is on fire, my window doesn't roll down and it is baking outside! Suck!!!

Orightey, if it didn't come on then that means your low speed fan isnt working. You did mention that you disabled your AC. Did you by any chance evacuate all the R-12 from the lines or depressurize the system in any way. Cuz if you did that, turning on the AC with the compressor unplugged wont do anything.
When you check for codes, its the high speed fan that comes on which is what is happening with yours. If your system is pressurized and the fan didnt come out here is what you can do. There is a black box right behind the passenger side head lamp. Its called the IRCM (Integrated Relay Control Module). Cut the #14 wire coming out of it and wire it up to a switch. With the wire cut, the low speed fan comes on when the ignition is on. If the fan doesnt come on, then there is an issue with your fan. This issue can be that the fusible link is burnt to a toast, in which case just sauder another one in (although I don't know which one it is, people say it is around the ignition solenoid). Also, if there is no power going into the IRCM (which is what happened most recently to some one dude on the boards) the fan wont come on. There are two wires that suply power to the IRCM (I dont know what colors, but you can figure it out).
Other than that, I'm out of ideas.

Alex,
Yes I did evacuate it because I had to remove all of it when I rebuilt the motor. So that would explain why the low speed doesnt work.
I will try your recommendations. Thanks for the guidance and help. It is much appreciated. Have a good one and stay cool in the heat!

Yeah, no pressure = no compressor 'on' = no fan on.
At's 'a no gud. :(
You might want to do a 'search' on the cooling fan to find the details on the IRCM and fusable link location.

just get a paper clip go to ac press switch its the canister by ac at firewall un plug it jump the two slots with the paper clips,
unplug ac pump turn on ac it should turn on fan if not ,
the fan is probably bad,or ircm ,
if it comes on it may be your temp switch,
ive been running mine on high speed for two1/2 yrs no problems. oh yeah and im using a taurus fan smaller and blowers more air than sc fan,
my high temp in summer has been the n in normal on gauge ,
they tell me high speed all the time will burn out my fan motor fast so far its 21/2 yrs if it goes ill pay another $12 for a used taurus fan motor and last another 21/2-3 yrs.

Any news yet Erich dude? I think im gonna get the air dam thing from GM (gags) and put it in. Some claim all kinds of degrees colder. I heard somewhere also that the remote oil cooler can also drop all kinds of degrees. I'm checking it out on the summitt catalog and am waiting to see how mike puts it in Lee's silver terd...err bird. ;)
