What was the first American production car with and intercooler?

My first inclination is to guess Studebaker, because I know they had a SC'ed model, just uncertain about the intercooler.

Well, that's my guess, right or wrong (probably wrong i know).

Sorry that's not it.
Hint #1: It is much more recent.

89 thunderbird SC :)

Now that would have made it a trick question. I wouldn't do that. Unless maybe the first XR7 came of the line before the first sc, then I would have said hah! not an sc but a cougar. Anyhow it wasn't either of those.

Hint #2: They came with a hood scoop that forced the fresh air through the intercooler.

Man Jeremy, when I saw you posted I thought maybe you would get it since you seem to know all the tests and stuff out of the magazines so well. Maybe this was a little before your time.

How about the Mustang SVO, cant remember exactly what year they came out (1984 maybe?). It had a hood scoop for the intercooler like Kurt said, and predates both the SC and the 1987 Turbo Coupe. Yes I know the Turbo Coupes were made before then but I dont think they recieved the hood scoops until the re-style in 1987.

We have a winner! The 1984 SVO is the correct answer.
The first turbo coupes did not have intercoolers. I knew a coulple of guys that had them when they first came out and they would get so hot the turbos would be glowing when they were running them hard. I don't know if intercoolers prevent that, that's just something I remember from the early days of turbos.

Only one I know of were the 65' and/or 66' Shelbys. Now that would be cool!

You're right about Studebakers being supercharged, but they weren't intercooled. The '57 and '58 Golden Hawks were supercharged and so were the '58 Packard Hawks. Some of the later models were supercharged also. My dad owns two Packard Hawks....only 588 of them were made! Talk about a rare bird!

well according to Eaton the 89 t-bird(xr7 for you kurt) is the first production supercharged car since 1957....
They could be wrong if you right about the studebakers

Where does Eaton say that about the tbirds, on their website or something? I'd like to check it out. I'm not doubting you I just think it's cool that they mention the sc.

Kurt

Also, how about the first car with the inertia roll seat belts? I know that's not as cool as intercoolers or superchargers, but you have to admit it is pretty trivial.

I thought one of the real old Packard models were supercharged too, I don't remember which year...

My dad bought that car brand new. It later became my first car when I got my license too. If you really want a black one, I have another I bought a few weeks ago. Im in the process of getting the title for it right now but I may be interested in selling it to a good home. Ive posted more about it on the SCCOSE board. Its a little bit of a fixer-up project, but its a solid and running car.

I want to get a black 91' XR7 but I might be interested in that one for my daughter. What do you think you'll be asking for it?

Well Id have to think about it, but like I said its a project car, but I still think its a good starting point. Heres a list of the things (that I know of) that it needs:

-a set of headlights and turn signals
-headlight support panel (or whatever you call it)
-rebuild supercharger (making a random popping noise)
-air Filter
-drivers side front fender (hood also has a little damage on the front corner of that side but can probably be easily repaired)
-new grill (painted black of course)
-VMM (still works but front panel is broken, but Ive seen people selling VMM's on the classified boards for about $40, new from Ford is about $200)
-Radio (and it seems a former owner has cut off the plug for the factory radio off the harness)
-headliner and carpet have water stains from an idiot parking it under a tree without having the sunroof completely closed, although the upholstry itself looks to be in good shape with very minimal wear on the seat bolsters, just needs a good cleaning
-needs 16" XR7 wheels, currently has 15" wheels off of an LS model

The Odometer shows 101,460, and i have found no evidence that it has ever been tampered with. We replaced the TPS sensor but the engine is still idling at about 1500-2000 RPM, but its not throwing any codes so its probably just got a vacuum leak somewhere.

That probably is a little too much for me get involved with at this point considering I'm still behind with work on my current car.

What's with people taking the rims off of cougars? Mine has those ugly LS wheels too!

I don't really need to get another car into February anyhow. I'll look you then and see if you still have it.

Yeah the guy I bought the car from had put the wheels on his mom's LS. I even offered to pay more for the car to get the wheels with it but I couldnt get momma to budge. I was a bit irritated but for getting a whole car like this for the price I got, I couldnt complain.

I guess if I had them and had another car I could use them on I might have kept them too. At least it was another Cougar they went on. Did you know that those rims were also available in 97'?
When I was trying to learn what the different years looked like that really confused me because I thought the last year for those rims was 91'.

Those rims were available from 89-91 on the XR7's and 97 on a "Sport" model. Of course by then, all of them were XR7's, which I really hate they did that. As far as I can tell, this "sport" model in 97 also had a spoiler on the trunk. The third brake light was on the spoiler instead of the back window in that package too

Well, Jason said something about winning the trivia at the SCCoSE Chattanooga meet,so I though I would pop in and see what its was about.

I wonder if they mean American? I know the 86-89 Toyota MR-2 had an electronically engaged roots type supercharger that is driven by a serpentine belt off of the crankshaft like our cars. Although, most MR-2 sites I have seen, can't 100% determine the manufactor of that SC, so if its not an Eaton, ours could be the first.
