Car starts without the key... ?

So the other day I was waiting in my car for someone with it off. I turned the black thingy (that you put the key in) a little so I could listen to the radio and figured I would try pushing in the clutch and turning it all the way. Well, the car started. Is this supposed to be like that?

It's not that big of a deal if I just always roll up my windows and lock the doors, but it still seemed odd to me.

Any input?

Sweet. Thanks. Is this something I can do myself? Or do I need to hire some fancy locksmith or a mechanic to do it?

Check out you local locksmith - I had one who was going to change my locks for $50 plus the cost of the cylinders (doors and ignition) if I pulled everything apart first so they could just install the locks. This was because my 4 year old was using my keys to 'unlock' her doll house.

Not that it's a bad job but they can get you a lock matched to your key for a few bucks more than the cylinder cost.
