Recently had my exahust redone and i noticed in the flowmaster box it recommended the use of heat shields. ARe these necessary ? After a stint of spirited driving i can smell the mufflers, not sure if its because they are new or because they are so hot they are burning the underside of the car

I do not know for sure, but I too recently put new high flow cat back exhaust with magnaflow muffler in my car, but did not use heat shields. However, I do remember when taking off the original exhaust, that the only shields it had were near the manifold/cat junction. I have not seen any heat problems as a result. Although I am using ceramic coated headers now which are designed to keep heat trapped in the exhaust as opposed to the engine compartment. My 2 cents.

According to Flow master, because the mufflers are so efficient at scavenging exhaust so well it removes heat from the engine, but the downside is that its stored in the mufflers.
