overanxious birdie

I'm sure somebody else has had this problem. My car at random times likes to "jump normal idle" and idle at anywhere from 1000 RPM's to 2000 RPM's. After patting it on the dash, saying "WHOA NOW, EASY BIRDIE", shutting the car off and restarting it, it returns to normal idle(500 to 600 RPM's). It does this at least every other time I drive it. Why? Why? Why?

Sounds like a bad IAC (Idle Air Control) valve...

These cars use an Idle Air Control Valve to get air past the throttle plate. When they go bad, they either stick open, causing high idle or closed where the car won't start. My 84 Mustang did the same thing and solved by replacing the IAC valve. It's the large silver cylinder thing located on the throttle body.

This will get the horse under control....

The SC's IAC is black and the only place you will get one that works properly is from Ford. The aftermarket guy's havent figured out how to make the SC's properly yet.
