I need advice I had lower intake mig welded and it worked good but we tried propane injection and it cracked at welds the aluminum contracts as it gets cold. will the better grade aluminum shrink as bad as the 5025 1/4 plate did?or did the guy just do a bad weld . or is this just gonna happen welding aluminum plate to cast.????

Manny, did you pre-heat all of the aluminum before it was welded? The manifold and the plate?

Manny...I don't know.
that's why I was asking the material questions and NDT questions.
Was this a horizontal weld?
I presume a t-joint.
Why MIG?
5025 has great heat crack resistance, but I don't know about the cold shock deal.
Did you do any NDT at all?
Weld coupons that I can look at?

Ill send you some samples if you email me a adress or Ill send you the lower intake and the plate see if you can do it . it was fine until i injected propane i measured intake charge at -72 deg fmaybe I need to make a compleate lower intake from 1/4 aluminum like a prostock intake or switch to steel and sheet metal????

Manny, can you send me a pic of where the weld cracked?
How does the underside look (the opposite side of where it was welded)?
Can you tell when it cracked? Was there a slow leak and then progressively worse or did you hear a bang or snap?
****Let's think about grinding out the crack and hitting it again. ***********

OK? Shall I consider this issue closed?
If I can help, let me know.
If you want a good job done, tr Martinez and Turek in Riverside. hey are a great machine shop and I believe they can do the weld. If they can't, they can steer you to a good local house.
I suggest youdo an NDT ( at least x-ray) before you accep[t the weld. Also, MIG has a tendency for perosity.
