View Full Version : Car doesn't run right after winterizing it

Since winter is here, I decided to winterize my car, but now, something is just not right. I started with draining the radiator and pouring in a prefect 50/50 mixture of antifreeze and water. Then, I drained my oil and poured in a prefect 50/50 mixture of oil and antifreeze. After all that, I checked the hoses and went for a spin. I wanted the mixtures to get a good blending together so nothing would freeze while it sat in my garage for the winter. Well, all I can say is, this car runs like it only produces 100hp. The car runs like it's already frozen up and has no power. What gives? Is it because I used GM's red Dexcool coolant.

Wait wait wait.....you put antifreeze in with the oil!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!! What are you thinking?!?! If so, thats you're problem, and i'd be surprised if you dont spin a bearing or lock up the motor. And yesm the dexcool is for the newer gm cars. Our cars need the green stuff. Looks like you got quite a few problems........oh my............

Holy Crap!!!!!!!
I sure hope this guy is kidding. Good thing it is winter and you will have plenty of time to rebuild the motor.

Sounds like your blower is freezing up. I'd recommend putting in a perfect 50/50 mixture of blower fluid and antifreeze. Just unbolt the four bolts on the blower top, remove it, and pour directly in. I think it holds about 0.90 Liters. :D

I hope this is a joke, I would hate to see somebody do that to a 95' SC, or somebody this stupid owning one.

12-02-2003, 01:32 PM
it could just require a simple change of the blinker fluid.........

You spray don't ya Duane? I think you problem is you need to fill the bottle with a 50/50 N20/antifreeze mix as well, and the others are right, if you use the red stuff you better swap to the m90 on the L67's they are designed for the red stuff.

wait, I thought you really are suppose to put antifreeze in the oil because in climates that get really cold , the oil can get really thick and could freeze to the pistions and shatter the block?:D

Oh man, Duane, you really did it this time. You better get your car over to the "dyno" asap for a check up!! I'll bring my .45 :D

Don't drive it or run the motor any more. You need to drain the oil out of the motor.
If you don't drive it any more,or start the motor. You might just get away with changing
the bearings. And not harm the crankshaft or the camshaft.

I think he might be serious. I have met this guy and seen him drinking everything from gas to window washer fluid....I think his only choice is to sell his car to me for 1000 bucks.

I think his only choice is to sell his car to me for 1000 bucks Tony, I thought you were just planning on buying the judges next year, but this is a much better idea. On second thought, he should sell it to me because I live in the same state and it'll be easier to visit after I fix it;) :D

You can probably get all that antifreeze out if you just steam clean the engine... I remember reading somewhere that the best way to do this is drain your oil and replace it with 5 quarts of high quality distilled water...

I just got off the phone with Nettles - looks like he didn't stop driving it in time. He's going to need a rebuild.
What do you guys think about taking up a collection to help him out?

Why would we do that? So that maybe next time he can add it into the gas tank to prevent fuel line freeze up? :)

ok... seriously, i don't know what posts to take seriously. I just know that if i screwed up and did something stupid that everyone wouldn't ridicule me this way but i guess i'd deserve it, especially for something this dumb. I'll help in any way that i can, can't guarantee money or parts right now... but i could find something. I'd want someone to do the same for me. Just put urself in his shoes and u'll know how it feels. Been there in a similar incident, but that was just when i let my mom touch my car:D

I have two gallons of 50/50 pre-mixed anti-freeze that I could donate.(green) for the radiator.
And I have about 1/2 gal of 100% mix, if Duane wants some extra for the rearend.

Thanks Gary!
I just got off the phone with NYC Russ - he donated $100.
I'm sure when Dave Niebert see's this he'll hit us with some serious cash too!
Come-on guys.... Nettles is a good guy that made a little mistake - let's help him out.

How about everyone donate a dollar to me for my Ford GT. Your dollar can't buy you anything, but all of your dollars together "can" buy me a nice car. :)

Hope the money helps - I scrounged around and found some more old parts which I sent out today - its not much but I have no use for it anymore.
I just wonder how Duane knew the car was down to 100hp before it blew... did he have hard evidence or was he using the "butt-dyno" again?

I have an air silencer from a 91 SC, perfect condition. I was keeping it for my frame off resto, but I guess I could donate it. Just tell me where to send it.

I could donate an air silencer also. Then you could probably make a dual-air silencer for some more hp.

If you seriously need money, I can probably help you out. At the moment, all I can offer is $1,000,000*, but it's a start.

I appreciate the way that Kurt Sunday and NYC Russ has stepped forward and got you guys to rally around me.
Now, does anyone know if putting Sta-Bil in the A/C system is bad? I wanted to keep my A/C fresh and the freon from going bad over the winter but now I’m thinking that wasn’t such a great idea.

I don't get it - why do you need A/C with the blown motor? Let it wait till its fixed. I would consider putting Winter Air into the tires though, especially since the car is going to be sitting for a while.
Oh, and 1,000,000 Turkish Lira, as of 5 minutes ago, equals sixty eight point nine American cents.

He could have avoided this whole thing by simply putting glow plugs into the oil pan and radiator in order to keep fluids warm :)
