tire recommendation?

Anyone recommend winter tires for IA weather? I got stuck bigger than ____ this morning on the way to a test. :(

T-bird4vr these cars suck in the SNOW.

I reccommend you park the bird and catch a ride with someone who has front wheel drive. I too had to learn that lesson they do great if the roads are clear, but if there is ice and snow on the road it is best to park it and wait till the storm passes. I tried snow tires and putting a bunch of sand bags in the trunk didn't make much differnce. With all the torque the tire just can't get a grip.... I suppose you could get some chains or studded tires and give them a try..

i agree with stocker, julian- these cars SUCK in the winter so you have two choices:

1. spend $300 on winter tires, then drive the sc in the winter which will suck; not only driving but the fact that brine will start to eat away at your undercarriage.
2. spend $300-$500 on a winter pos.

I was hoping to have my winter car by now, but I'm just hitching rides to work with my roomate until my next paycheck..then it's ford escort heaven baby!

just my .02; if you do decide to drive the bird this winter get a couple of sandbags and invest stock in the local car wash and visit them twice a week. that's what i did the one year i drove mine in the winter. good luck:(

Guys, I never, NEVER got stuck in my TC with studded snow tires on it. I'm assuming it have an lsd too. You just have to be careful. Granted DM probably is another animal all together.

3 things guys,
1) I might be able to drive my sisters saturn around this winter, if I can bring myself to drive something like that.
B) I don't know if I can go that long not driving my car
3) Realistically, I DO love this car and would/will wash it twice a week, but I probably won't have it much after I graduate. Hopefully I will be able to keep it, but they just aren't collectors items. Thats sucks but it is the sad truth.

I think I would go insane if I didn't drive it this winter!

Up until the winter of 2002, my 95 SC 5-speed was a daily driver, year round. Here in the Toronto area we usually don't get huge amounts of snowfall, but enough that winter tires are a big help on a RWD car with some power.

I used 225-60HR16 Pirelli or Bridgestone H-speed rated winter performance tires on my stock wheels, never had any problems getting stuck, even with the car being lowered on Eibachs. I'd often start in 2nd gear, or just short-shift at 1100 - 1200 rpm to keep the tires from spinning too much. You do have to steer a little bit to keep the car in a straight line when coming away from a stop, up to about 20 mph, but after that, it's fine.

And yes, you will get some corrosion, but there's always oil spray treatment to cut down on that.

The only way to go around here is to get some decent snow tires. DONT rely on all season tires to get around.

I had no trouble with my 93 LX. i ran a set of Cooper 225-70-15 Mud and snow's .......

If either of you are looing for a beeter, I'll have my 88 for sale in a week or two.

I just picked up a 92 LX and Al and i will be dropping an engine in it this weekend. Once I know it runs, the 88 will go on the sale block.

Asking 1000.00 obo

I don't think the 88 would be much better Mike!

Unless it comes with snow tires.

:D
Take it easy

I offer it (the 88) to anyone as an alternative to driving your "good" bird's in the snow!!!!

As for it being RWD, I dont see the big deal ....... I've been driving RWD cars in the snow since 1975 and I've never had a major issue. Driving a RWD vehicle in the snow just takes an adjustment in your driving habbits.

Got some studded tires for it. They handled up to 90 alright. I had studs on my TC and it was all over the road at 50mph. I was really afraid that was going to happen again, but it looks to be ok.

Little traction on dry pavement, I will see how they do in the snow.

Thanks guys

Where'd you get the tires from and what kind are they? I need to get some sometime soon here also. I went and bought 120lbs of sand bags yesterday for 5 bucks but I still need more traction. I hate winter :(
