View Full Version : Any interest in SPEC clutch group purchase?
Bill McNeil
12-10-2003, 08:32 PM
Regardless of what stage or product is desired, I'm going to try and arrange a group purchase on SPEC products if there is sufficient interest. This would include SPECs 11lb aluminum flywheel for 5-speed cars, and will apply to all model year SCs.
Let me know.

I'd more than likely put in for a flywheel.

When are you trying to set this up for? Right away?

Depending on how much you can get the entire setup I would be in. If you can get a GP on the flywheel, I would be in.
Oooo, see if they offer Military discounts!:D Hey, I need all the help I can get.

The group buy would likely not take place until late January or later. I just want to establish if there is any interest before I start calling around. Otherwise, I'm just going to go ahead and buy the stuff for the best price I can find.
Keep them coming boyz! If we get 6 people, we can likely do something.

All right, as long as it is about a month after the holidays. I'll be strapped for cash until probably the middle of January. :o
Pricing will also play a large part on my involvement. Definitely let me know. Thanks!

I probably wouldnt be in for a group buy, but here are the best prices I found for SPEC stuff:

He doesnt have the flywheel listed but I assume he could get it, and the prices are far below any others Ive seen.

Not sure which clutch set up I need for road racing and will have to decide, but very interested in aluminum flywheel for sure if they make.
Looks like another deal where i need to call them myself maybe.
What about other brands? I havn't looked into this yet as I owe money on other parts just bought. But if I can get a lower price then will find a way.

I would be interested in a group buy. I was already planning on buying the light weight flywheel and stage III clutch this spring so if I can get it much cheaper, than I am in. Also, being that it wont take place for another month or so that will help out a bunch too!
Thanks!

Gentlemen,
Thanks for your intererst so far. I have made contacts at 5 different vendors and am waiting to find out who will be able to provide the best price. As of right now, I have one specific place that is selling for about $10-$20 below suggested retail, but offers FREE shipping, which is a nice incentive for a heavy item.
In the meantime, if those who are seriously could email me at bill.sc@rogers.com, and let me know which items you are interested in purchasing. We don't have to go through with the actual buy until February sometime, so if money is tight right now, you will have some time before this comes up for payment.
If you are unsure what products you might want, or would like more information on the different clutch stages, I suggest you click the link I've posted below and read the individual product descriptions.

I have recieved emails from at least 4 interested people. We will need at least 6 people to get a "group purchase" price from any vendor, and so far I've made 3 potential contacts which will provide a price schedule within the next week or so. More information will follow.
Jason Wild

I sure hope we can find 2 more people to get in on the buy if not maybe I will just buy 2 one for each car.;)
I want in even so I did not e-mail you Bill;)
Bill McNeil
01-05-2004, 10:48 AM
Okay, I received a response from a potential vendor that will offer 20% off retail pricing, plus we pay the individual shipping charges. That would make a Stage III clutch, which is $339, cost $271.20, which is a very good deal in my opinion. I'm just trying to verify if this discount will apply to the flywheels also, and will have the information within the next day or so.
We need 6 people for the 20% discount, by the way. If we only have 4 people, the discount is 15%. Lets get some more people on board for this, gentlemen!
Doug Franklin
01-05-2004, 02:37 PM
Do all 6 have to get the same stage, or can we select what we want & get discount, as long as 4-6 of us? Plus sure would like an AL flywheel.

Gentlemen,
I'm still negotiating with a particular source, but here is the deal:
-You can choose any stage clutch and save the 20%
-You can buy just a flywheel, and still save the 20%
-You can buy a clutch and flywheel, and save on shipping costs
I hope to have the details worked out shortly.
Steve,
Email me at bill.sc@rogers.com if interested in joining the purchase.

I purchased this clutch kit from SCP, my friend went through (i sent him to this guy, very nice guy and will save you alot of money) http://www.angelfire.com/pa5/srracing/clutches.htm and he had good service. they have great parts. i payed alot due to me not getting in contact with they guy due to e-mailing settings problems i created. but i am very please with the kit. i have the Spec Stage III Clutch kit (Clutch Disk , Pressure Plate, Tho Out Bearing, alignment tool) (had tranny rebuilt, new slave, new inland empire driveshaft, solid rubber motor mounts), and i also had the Pressure plate lightned due to someone at TBSCEC.com told me to spend the extra money because the Spec pressure plate is a little more in weight, and they wish they known that before ordering or they would have gotten there lightened. i paid i think 75 extra for this, also i got the Spec lightened Pressure plate. All these products are sweet. Get ready for a noticeable harder clutch pedal for the Stage III though. but i asked people and they said the Stage III is the biggest a few people would use for a street car. (Its a 5 start design) (look at pics below) the only thing i have experienced bad with any of this was the flywheel bolt holes. they wouldnt fit the stock bolts (where the bolt design goes to a smooth surface towards the head of the bolt, it wouldnt fit), and from posting i found out from a few others said they ran into the same thing. (my suggestion would be to take a Flywheel bolt and ship it to them and make sure it fits) . I had to go get new ones at a local hardware store grade 8 full threaded (witch later jeggs tech support confirmed was a step up from the stock SC bolts used) i might send back my flywheel (when i take it back out this year) to Spec with new flywheel bolts and have them drill out the wholes so it would fit stock size bolts, and also another thing is Jeggs told me they carry a universal flywheel bolt for chevy and ford from ARP that is awesome for those wanting to upgrade the bolts. Dont forget that you should run Solid rubber motor mounts/tranny mount/crossmember using these clutches.
Good Luck.. Just trying to help.. Alex L..

For the Spec Stage III there is a choice of carbon or ceramic for friction material (i asked the guy and he said for a strret car he suggested carbon, so thats what i got)
Also i talked to both Centerforce and Spec Tech support to find out what size would be better in the racing aspect for clutch size and they both agreed that the 11" was the best route, they said bigger isnt always better (because i was thinking that, and i wanted to upgrade to a 11.5" clutch disk)
SuperCoupeSC91
01-11-2004, 12:49 PM
for those that might be wondering
89-93 Stock size clutch + Flywheel Surface Area 11"
94-95 Stock Size clutch + Flywheel Surface Area 11.5"
To use a 11.5" clutch kit on a 11" flywheel you need to upgrade the flywheel
to use a 11" clutch kit on a 11.5" flywheel your ok
The best for performance (According to Spec/Centerforce Tech Support, look below)
11" clutch kit with 11" flywheel surface area design
you can put a 11" clutch kit with 11" flywheel on a 94-95 SC

Thanks for the detailed information! We appreciate you taking the time to share you experience, and give us some added details and suggestions.
For those interested in this group purchase, the buy will begin the first week of February, with orders and payments due by February 15th. 20% off retail is our projected discount, but I'm still checking other sources to make sure this is our lowest available price.
I will also start another post on the non-tech forum to remind people, and try to get more people on board when the buy officially begins. Please check back here, or email me for progress details.
If anyone interested has not yet emailed me, please do so.

Alex, I plan to do alot of Autocrossing this summer and maybe 1 or 2 road races but it would mainly be driven out on the street. Should I buy the carbon one or get the ceramic one?

"quick35th"
the driveshaft i got threw FSR performance, i seen that the website is down, i think its kelly simons company, i bought it threw him. really nice guy..i dont know how to get ahold of him any more but i bet someone here could.
as for the clutch friction surface i would go with the carbon, i told the guy i would liek to go once in a while to the track as well for quarter mile maybe a handlefull of times a year, and thats what he suggested. so i assume to get the same. you could call the Spec tech's and ask them in your case. but i think he said i wouldnt like to drive around with it. my car isnt a daily driver but i would like to drive it this summer on nice days..
To all: i juts hope you guys get a flywheel if you do with holes that fit. i gotta threw the junk of probably paying shipping and sending mine back to spec and then reinstalling it..
Good Luck Alex LaChance

Actually, the person conducting that group purchase on Corral has already contacted me looking for addition product volume. I'm in the process of finding out what discounts will apply to the Thunderbird part #s, and we already have 3 other potential vendors lined up at 20% off retail, as it looks so far. I have another vendor trying to contact SPEC for reduced cost pricing for a single buy, and awaiting an answer currently.
JJaney,
Can you post another link to that thread? I signed up on Corral, went to the group purchase page, and saw nothing about SPEC there. I also went to he classifieds forum, nothing there either. I did a search with keyword "SPEC", and pulled up a bunch of technical stuff. Let me know so that I can post there directly.
Thanks!

Gentlemen,
Thank you for your patience thus far. We will be starting the buy hopefully within the next 7 days. If there is a delay, it will only be about another week or so. I'm trying to chose between the various vendors, based on their reputation, locatation (shipping considerations $$$) and efficiency in communicating with me.
So far, 3 vendors have agreed to do the 20% off SPEC retail.
At this point, it is possible that we may get a further discount if we get more orders. They are talking 15 orders (pieces) in order to do better than 20% off. At the very least, we will get the 20% as long as we have 6 orders.
Within the next few days, I will need 100% commitments from each of the people who will be ordering, as well as what they intend to order in the buy. I would prefer if people emailed me, as well as posted here for everyone to see.
My email again is bill.sc@rogers.com
Please respond ASAP.
Bill McNeil
02-09-2004, 06:39 PM
This is the email I sent out to those that have emailed me since this thread started, expressing interest in joining the group purchase.
Please respond to the thread link below, as well as an email to me as a
commitment to join the SPEC group purchase. The buy will be getting under
way within the next 1-2 weeks, at which time people like yourself must be
prepared to submit their orders, and payment in full. Money will be
submitted to the vendor directly, not to me. Communication regarding
shipping after the orders have been submitted will also be handled by the
vendor directly. All that information will follow via email, and on the GP
thread. A new thread will start with instructions as soon as the buy
commences. If you have any questions regarding pricing, please let me know
and I can figure out what the cost will be after the discount. As for
shipping, I cannot speculate what that will cost at this time.
Initial orders and information will be sent to me, and I will pass the
information on at the beginning stages. I will submit an order page
outlining the individual orders, the people's corresponding emails, and
shipping addresses. This way, all information can be forwarded within one
email, and confusion can be avoided. I will check and double-check
everything to ensure that orders are places correctly. An order
confirmation email will be sent to each person before the final order is
arranged. Payment will then be requested from people on an individual basis,
directly from the vendor. This will allow for emails to remain at a
minimum, and the orders to remain organized and efficient.
I look forward to hearing from you.

My pleasure, gentlemen!
It would be great if those who bought flywheels could report back on the HP gains they achieved, even if it's just a seat-o-the-pants observation.
From what I understand, the holes in the flywheels may need to be slightly enlarged to fit the stock flywheel bolts, because of the shoulders on them. You can have this done at a machine shop, or likely do it yourself with a drill press.
Keep me posted (via email)!
