Changing MAF sensor position?

I'm considering building my own cold air intake system for my 95. I have seen cautions to make sure there are no sharp bends immediatly before the MAF sensor, because they can cause turbulence or at least density variations in the air flow going into the sensor.

Is there any reason I shouldn't move the MAF sensor closer to the Throttle body so it can be in a straight section of pipe?

I notice that (at least in the stock MAF) the sampling tube is not centered in the body- Is the rotational orientation of the MAF important?
