Using Cast Crank in an SC Motor

Has anyone used a cast crank with an SC motor and had problems with the crank body or snout cracking/breaking? I'm in the process of putting a blower on a 91 Cougar engine and am wondering if I need to nitride the crank or find a forging. Any information from someone who has used a cast crank would be helpful. Thanks.

Steve

BTW--the motor will see some horsepower.

we are using a stock lx 3.8 with 8lbs boost in my friends tbird ,

using my inverted without a ic dont need it at 8 lbs

The very first SC's had cast cranks. It was a HUGE headache for FORD and I believe the spec was changed to forged very early on. They just can't take the stress produced by the SC engine.

A large part of the problem with the early cranks which were duracast is speculated to be due to main cap walk. A forged crank certainly would be a better way to go if you are planning to build big HP and a main girdle should be taken into consideration as well. If you use a cast crank, at the very least, have it magnufluxed and shot peened to start with. Might even consider using a 4.2 crank and go budget stroker, just dont expect to break records before breaking the crank.
