I have done alot of motor pulls in the SC's. But not to much with the tranny. I have droped one out, but never installed it. Any tips anyone can give me on removing and installing the tranny, would be big help. I would have the car on jack stands. SO I may only have a little room to play with. I know when I removed the tranny in the past, it was a pain to get it out of the drive shaft. When I did, the tranny came close to falling on my face. Any help would be great thanks.

Yes that sounds like a good plan. Sorry I didn't get that site you were typing about. Have you ever installed that tranny?

Slingin-

I'd LOVE to know where you came up with the surmise that you have a 4R70W tranny in your 90 SC!

The 4R70W came AFTER the AOD-E, which replaced the AOD in some 93 and the 94/95 Birds/Cats. The AOD-E/4R70W is electronically controlled by the PCM, and has TWO leads going to the tranny-the AOD only has a lead to the Speed Sensor near the tail of the tranny.

So-

AOD - 1989-1993
AOD-E - 1993(?)-early 1995(?)
4R70W - 1995-1997

close, but not quite. The AOD was 89-93, the 4R70W was 94-95. Mustangs and Crown vics had the AODE gearset, but the thunderbird had the 4R70W planetary set starting in 94.

The AOD-E was used in some of the 93s-only way to tell is the cert plate

93 tbirds? There's no catch code that I can find that has drivers for an electronic automatic for 1993.

the tranny only made it into a few cars-lots of problems since it was the first tranny to be controlled by the PCM-for the Thunderbird

i may be incorrect about what was in them stock but in mine, which was just replaced, the old one is a 4R70W. The owner b/f me did do alot of mechanical work. Im sorry for the bad info but i did belive they were put in. I guess he changed it from a later sc, pro b/c the last one had some problems.

Generally what happens is the AOD fails due to the engineering, and they are replaced with the 4R70W.

You can modify the AOD and add the good stuff from the 4R70W, like the Planetary gear set and the wide ratio gearing. Here's what I've done with my AOD:

-The AOD transmission has been rebuilt by Iowa Overdrive and is spec'd with a 2500rpm TQ, Lentech hardened input, new valvebody with Sonnax internals, upgraded 1-2 accumulator, A+ OD Servo with o-ringed piston rod, Alto Red Eagle clutch packs, Alto Kevlar 2" OD Band, "Mechanical Diode" Planetary and full Torrington needle bearings throughout. The interior of the transmission has been coated with an anti-friction compound, including the servos and the holes for the servos, while the case has been coated externally with a compound that helps dissipate heat.-

I didn't use the wide ratio kit because I felt there was no need for it.

Im getting ready to pull my AOD for a rebuild, I found a pretty cool post on this site about the actual rebuild.

I also saw one that said you have to drop or lower the rear to slide the driveshaft over it. other than that its loosen bolts and take it out
