Does any one know how fast these are running. my friend has an older one, the model before the ones now. the ones now have 260 HP and 280 ft. lbs. it took gm that long to super charge a 3.8l engine? wow. why does the SC have more torque but less HP? Do you tink i can take my friends when i get my car fixed. all i have is removed air scilencer, k&n, and gutted cats. he wants to race and he says ford sucks, and of course, being the 16 year old i am ran my mouth, and then i found out his gran prix is supercharged. yay.

check out the ss poll. Someone just posted a thread about GTP 1/4 mile times. I know a few modded GTP killed me at the track in my SVT Focus. I was running mid 15s with intake and underdrive pulleys.
So what do these SC run in the 1/4.

We race the GTP's 3 times per year in Iowa.
Most of them are about 1/2 second faster than a stock SC.
With a few mods they are in the mid 14's

so they are about the same then huh? i can take him then because when my car is fixed it will have a magnaport 2 on it hehe. and stock 5 speed supercoupes are in the low 15s. not bad at all for late 80s early 90s v6 huh?

Let me rephrase that, Stock the GTP's run 14.8 to 15.1

Looks like 1997:
http://www.edmunds.com/used/1997/pontiac/grandprix/1109/specs.html?tid=edmunds.u.prices.leftsidenav..6.Pon tiac*
according to edmunds anyway, in 1997 the GTP had 240hp and 280ft*lbs of torque... still a tractor though.
Stock on stock I would expect the later models to be faster than the SCs and the earlier ones to be a bit slower. Also according to Edmunds, the 1998 GTP did 0-60 in 8.8 which seems a bit slow to me... as the '94-'95 SCs I think were supposed to do 0-60 in the low 7s I thought... ?

If they got an 8.8 0-60, they must have been driving with 4 flat tires. Any stock Stock GTP since 97 should have no problem pulling mid 6s to 60 and as quick as mid 14s in the quarter, BONE STOCK. And remember, unlike the SC they do not have an intercooler. They can be in the 13s with just a pulley switch, CAI, and ubend removed from the exhaust. DOn't underestimate those suckers!! Oh, and that's the 97-03 models, the 04+ should be even quicker!

Spex direct from Motor Trend Magazine have the following figures for Pontic GTP:
1991 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP (auto)
0-60 = 8.4
1/4 mile = 16.3
1997 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP
0-60 = 6.6
1/4 mile = 15.0
2000_Pontiac_Grand Prix GTP
0-60 = 6.8
1/4 mile = 15.1
2004 Pontiac Grand Prix
0-60 = 6.5
1/4 mile = 14.9

The 91-96s were totally different cars. they were powered byt a NA 3.4 DOHC V6 with around 210 HP and 200 torque. they were also avail with a 5 speed some years though and those could hit well into the 15s. Check www.clubGP.com for the 97-03 and 04+ models, you'll find most hit the 14s bone stock, mostly mid high 14s and very few in the VERY low 14s. they aren't to be taken lightly.

pre-97 GTPs had superchargers...a 3.4L S/Ced v6 I dont know when the started it but I know there were older body styled GTPs with S/Cs...I think they have a worse aftermarket than us.
I think they used M62? eaton S/Cs....

no really, did you ever have it at a track?

Actually 91-96 GTPs had NA 3.4 DOHC v6s, 91-93s where avail. with 5 speeds. the SCs didn't start until the 97s with the SCed 3800 series 2. The Aftermarlet for the 3.4s is horrible, basically nonexistant. The 3.8 SCs on the other hand have a GREAT aftermarket. There was a 3.1 turbo GP offered in 89-90?, but it was a job by McLaren, the others are all GM in house.

Never got a chance to run it, it wasa toasted when I got it, but I was able to make some green on it, so it was nice. :) my bro has a red 91 TSI/turbo/auto, it has a K&N, ported gen, gen 2 exhaust manifold, a ported 14b turbo and a couple other things, it runs pretty good, but has some boost leaks right now.

one of my son's buddies has a talon. he keeps telling us that he can take my boy's tbird, but his car is always broke. i have never seen it, it spent all last summer in a garage some where. personally i think that they are over rated.

eclipses/talons are way over rated for the simple fact that they are always broken, when they run...theyre quick.....but no worries, theyre in the garage 90% of the time

I agree that Talon's/Eclipses are over rated. Most of them in this town are broke down all the time too. As for the original question i think a stock GTP would lose vs. a decently modded SC. But that's how it is with alot of cars when its stock v.s modified. Just my 2 cents.

That doesn't make them overrated, it makes them, uh, maintenence intensive (SCs are too, really guys), they are very fun cars and easy to make very fast. Anyways, they do take a lot of maintenence :D

having had both cars, i have some input...
the stock GTP's tend to be quicker...this is in part due to the fact that the have less torque & are easier to launch being automatics...however, a properly launched stock 94-95 SC can keep up or beat a stock GTP. i've also noticed a huge variance in stock GTP's having raced some of them. some are just faster than other stock GTP's & some are just way faster...i'm sure GM's quality control is responsible for this :D
nontheless, speed isn't always everything, we all know which car here is a better overall car...no question about that!!!

Another advantage GTP's (97-03 at least) have over SC's is they are some what lighter , how much I don't know. ndangrd, since you've owned both maybe you have some input on the weight difference between an SC and a 97-03 GTP?

GTP's are approximately 300-500 pounds lighter than the SC's i believe...the 2 & 4 door versions may weigh a different amount...but yes, this is they ONLY reason the stock GTP's might be quicker...i forgot to mention that above.

My wife drives a 99 GTP and her's has run a best of 14.1 @ 96 bone sock. This was at a Super Coupe meet and racing against several of the St. Louis area guys. Most I've seen run high 14s stock and the wifes car generally runs 14.3 or 14.4 with tires spinning hard the first 30 ft.
That car was the reason I started modding my SC, couldn't stand it when she would beat me stoplight to stoplight.

Correct on the years for the 3.1 turbo Prix's...started out as factory "SE"s" and were sent to ASC/McLaren for modifcation(ASC did the body kit, sunroof, and other styling cues while McLaren was responsible for turbocharging/intercooling the 3.1). Just a little info on the 89-90 Turbo GP's if any of you are interested...they generally ran anywhere from low 15's at best(keep in mind these were magazine quoted figures) to low-mid 16's at worst. I have a mint metallic black(subtle gold and blue metallic flakes in the paint...stock) 1990 TGP w/ 70K on it...have ran it at a 1/4 track twice so far..best of a 14.7@91.94 on a 2.1X 60' time(spinning the first 20ft on that run...245/50/16 Goodyear Eagle RS-A's on the car..not that great to say the least) at the Atlanta Dragway(~1100-1200ft above sea level) in Commerce, GA w/ a basically stock car. Using the NHRA altitude correction factor, that equals out to right at a 14.5 at sea level...I was running my "show" intake for the runs I made since I didn't have time to swap out to my other setup(top-end felt like it was lacking). Performance modifcations performed on the car inlude an intake, exhaust modifcation, and a Topgun 160 chip(raises boost and fixes faults in the stock chip...computer controlled solenoid controls boost). Anyways, I'm trying to acquire a spare TGP motor to do some things to and either throw in my TGP or possibly into one of my other cars...trying to get the 90 into the 13's at best when I'm done w/ it...should be there easily by the end of this year.
EDIT: here's some pics of my TGP in case some of you guys have never seen one(they look almost identical to the 91-93 GTP model grand prixs..although, they have a slightly different front end/headlight design...composite lights on my car vs. recessed "mini quad" lights on the 91-93+'s).

yeah this girl has one of those turbo grand prix at my school. she thinks she is hot shiz. haha she beat my frinds turbo coupe by a car length and said she could take my car. hahahaha right......... at about 3 car lengths shifting to 3rd she backed off of it. that was the best launch i ever got though, and shifted into second real quick, if i had messed up it would have been close, but i didnt as this one was for pride, i had just dissed both GMs and 4 bangers  so i had to win haha. wouldnt you guys love to be 16 again and a racer in a town that loves fast cars?? next kills at my school, 72 chevy truck, 97 gtp, 04 gtp....... killing soon (when my car is fixed!)
