Wow removing pilot bearing is a real pain

I used a 5speed crank in the new motor for my red 90 AOD and when we tried to install it we realized that the pilot bearing was still in the end of the crank and won't match up to the torque converter. I tried an inside bearing puller and it wouldn't budge it, impossible. Upon consulting the Ford manual Robert tells me that it has to be slide hammered out. Well, it wasn't easy and we had to destroy the bearing in the process but it did come out. We had the motor swinging by the chain on the hoist while we did it. Geez, what a job. We had to remove the inner race in pieces and needle bearings first, then get the double hooks in the bigger hole and finally, it came out in 3 whacks. Never occured to either one of us to check it before hand.

Yea I had a time with that too. I tried the packing with grease trick and the bearing laughed at that. So the slide hammer was next and after persuasion she came out.
