Those wheels are from a 03 Cobra, I believe.

I believe they are from a 98 or 99 Cobra. $299 for the set with tires. He is such a lucky a$$...lol.

J57ltr
02-24-2004, 10:44 PM
That's a good price, but if he had waited a few months I probably could have found them for $25. Lol

They look good I didn't even know that he got them. Or maybe he already told me..

Do you guys now how he made them fit?

Nice pics Calvin, thanks again to you and yours for graciously hosting us for the weekend. We had the best time. It was great to finally meet that Colby guy you keep talking about. Doug Frankin's breif appearance was icing on the cake showing his new Anthony Jones front sub-frame and control arms.

Here's the low down on the wheels/hubs/brakes swap.
Those wheels are stock '96-'97 Cobra, 17x8. I had to change the hubs to '99-up Cobra. I couldn't swing the added costs of full on Cobra 13" brakes during the swap but I wasn't about to bolt those big mags over the standard undersized Thunderbird brakes so I scrounged up a set of salvage yard '97 Thunderbird V8/Sport front brakes which are also installed on all Mark 8's. It gave me another inch of rotor size. I had all the rotors redrilled with a SN95 Mustang type 5 on 4.5" bolt pattern in between the existing 5 on 4.25" MN12 Thunderbird holes. The Mustang hubs have slightly larger hub-centric rings than the MN12 so all the MN12 rotors had to be bored out slightly to slide on them. I used MN12 rear retainers and Cobra fronts. The rear hubs look slightly different in the back but went on right and function identically. The Mustang front hub's ABS tone ring was slightly too far out board for the MN12 spindle's sensor reach. This was remedied easily, though carefully, with a large three jaw puller. I used the puller and a stopper plate to pull the tone rings as far in as there was hub diameter. This is how the Helms manual said to remove a damaged one for replacement but I only moved it out as far as necessary instead of all the way off. George Davenport's article on the subject in the March 2000 Chargin' Thunder was an invaluable reference though I did a few things differently.

Hey Calvin, didn't you have any pics of me skying the front on that pink Huffy with white wall tires? That is the same bike known as "Slumber Party" that OWN3S Oxford Street. Slumber Party indeed, what a sleeper!

Man I read all these articles and it still confuses me sometimes. I guess I need to take off my tires and give it a good look through that way I know what I'm working with. I like your brake mod idea definetly a $$ saver. I need to start looking around for the hub parts because I want to do a swap quickly. Can you give me a rough estimate of how much you paid? I found an article in the technical forums and that one ran around 600 bucks give or take. But that was with the Cobra brakes. I appreciate all the info man.

Good pics Calvin. Thanks again for the great hospitality. Next time hand the camera to someone else a few times so YOU can be in the pics too.

I definitely need to do some body mods. I look like a little old munchkin. Either that or find some other short people to hang around. I had a great time.

Well I certainly enjoyed meeting everyone and only regret I just could not have stayed longer. Would have been nice to help out with any work on Saturday. Next time I will plan on bringing wife and not make other comitments.

All the cars look good and Calvins had some pep mine doesn't. Only one I road in. It is nice to see SCs that run good. Raised tops etc. So I have to get with it on the 89 I am starting work on. COLBY, dang man that car does it for me. Must be the shade of red and wing or something. I see a paint job coming for me too.

b00stedv6biRd: You may want to contact cudaz101 and see if he can get the wheels you want new and drilled to the 4.25 bolt pattern with either a Mustang or MN12 offset. Cudaz101 father ownes a tire wheel store and we just had a bunch of 03 Cobra wheels made on a group buy. He was offering almost any style on that buy but mine were 150 a wheel plus 20 a wheel shipping. They all had offset changed to MN12 as well on this buy if you want, but I chose the Mustang offset for other purposses. It may not be too late. RussellR has done it different. You can still get 13" brakes on with MN12 hubs. So there is an alternative. Personally I would rather have the 4.5 bolt pattern like Vernon is talking about but this deal on 4.25 with the wheels made it a little easier for me for now. I guess I spent too much but I had to have what Fast Ed N is running on his 95. I have been wanting a set of those for some time now.

Yeah, Colby was a great asset for us on Saturday. He knows the city very well, unlike me........just enuff to be dangerous.

Doug and myself chatted for a few hours before ya'll arrived on Friday. I got some great pictures of the K-member, that he will be sporting on the SC soon! Was great putting a name to the face~

I think I will start saving some of these informative post! I would like to get a few of those Charging Thunders next time we link up, Mr. V~

I tried like hell to get a picture of you racing the three years old on his tricycle, but the race was over before it started. Must be the formula that kids been eating.

I did manage to get one other picture of you~ Wish it could have been better, for blackmailing purposes and/or slave labor~~

It was nice metting everybody at Calvins this past weekend.Steven,Next time we go to a parade i will bring a chair to stand on so i can catch some beads.Your height sure makes it easy to steal beads from the shorter people like Rick..LOL
Vernon, was nice to finally meet the SC guru and your family.Hope the tranny works out and get that 95 back on the road.Rick, must be nice being a co-pilot during a 7 hour trip{nap time}.Hope next time you can bring your car, don't get to see too many teal Sc's around here. And you won't be the only late model SC at the meet.
Doug,I have read many post from you about that track around your home, sure sounds like fun.It was nice to put a face with a name.Hope every one had a great time.

Sorry we didn't get to go to the city, it would have been to crazy with the kids and Calvin.Atleast we got to eat some seafood and see some parades.Next time we need to plan a trip around Jazz Fest. That would be a great time to see the city at its best.

Hope to see Ya'll soon in Houston.

So Stephen, did the wires take the tremmers out of the engine?

Colby and all, a stock SC does very well on the open track. All you guys would be quicker with your better exhaust and other mods than me and maybe one of you give RussellR a run for the money in his red SC and Robert Kecks Stroked 4.2. We meet June 11&12 MSR and then maybe drag June 13 at the motorplex in Ennis. Couple of other meets I posted in that DFW thread in our forum pg 2.

Vernon the more I look at the pics the better I like your wheels too.

Calvin Thanks for pics again. Showed my wife and she liked your cars. Rick I think she would like your teal the best.;)

Doug: Thanks for all the info. I'll shoot him an e-mail ASAP. I already have some 03 Cobra rims but they are the Mustang offset. I got them off eBay pretty cheap. If I can get some with an MN12 offset from Cudaz101 then they might be back up for sale. My friend has a 95 Cobra with those same wheels as Vernon and I was thinking about getting them for my bird. He also has some 2000 Cobra R wheels and some 02 Bullitt wheels. So the hub sawp would give me some more options. But if I can still get some 03 Cobra rims with the MN12 offset that would be great! That was my first choice of rim for the bird. So I got them off eBay and realized they didn't fit.

Vernon: I might have some 03 Cobra rims if you'd like to purchase them ;)

Thanks again for all the info guys!

Thanks for the info Doug, maybe we can work out a caravan of SC's to go to Dallas in June. I went to Ennis a couple of yrs ago at the FFW.

Just so everyone knows, the Houston Auto Show will be at Reliant Center Apr 2 - 11

Pershaps we can get together for FFW at Houston Raceway Park. The dates are April 30 - May 2

Duane, do the wheels have the 5 x 4.25 bolt pattern or the 4.50 bolt pattern? I don't mind the offset to Mustang (+26 or so?)because the wheels stick further out. I will rim the wheel opening or take a drimel to them on a wrecked car or 2 for the track. Right now I do not have a car with hub swap to 4.50. All of mine are 4.25 now.

Now lets say you did do the hub swap. I bet Cudaz101 can get you wheels with the 4.50" bolt pattern and the MN12 offset which is what? +35 or so? That would be interesting. Or you can do what Fast Ed N did and have Cobra wheels machined on back side to about +30 offset. I got a bunch of email from Ed on what he did but it is not his street set. Just track but he has no feder rubbing with the stiff suspension he put on. Ed has the hub swap.

The plug wires did the trick, it does not cut out under boost anymore. I really need to open up that exhaust though to get the full effect. Everytime I want to mash on it, all I can thank about is white smoke in the rearview mirror. Not a sight I want to see again...lol.

Had an excellent time last weekend, Calvin and your wife were great host and hostess. Would love to do it again next year.

Well good. Hope sonicman read that comment.

Calvin, how about an anual thing? At least it is a break from the cold up here. Oh thanks for posting the K pics. I could not repost the ones in the member area for those asking in the main thread.

Guys I'll be offline taking care of some things for a week or so. Duane I'll be better able to answer your questions then. I can give you some ballpark figures.

Wheels and tires, newspaper add for getting married sale, $300.

Hubs and change over parts all new, from Tommie Vaughn Ford, including FRPP Mc Guard lugs and locks set for '94 - '98 Cobra wheels (yes mine are '94-'95, the difference was center caps and paint, now you can only get them as chromed '98 new, thanks for chiming in Damon, Yeehaw!) about $360, I have an account and don't pay list.

Salvage yard '97 sport front brakes and stock size rear rotors, incuded lines calipers, and pads on front and also a SN95 Mustang Vert aluminum spare wheel $140. Charlies Auto Salvage in Tomball TX. I get a nice price there also.

Machine work to said rotors, Smiley's Racing Houston, $120.

You could save money by having your existing brakes redone.

Keep in mind the 17" spare won't fit the trunk well and the 15" spare won't fit the front brakes, so if you get a flat on the front with this set-up you have to transfer a good rear wheel/tire onto the front and put the spare on the back. There must have been another spare offered or two different floor pans that changed in '97 but I didn't think about it until just now.???
