Sorry this is long

Okay, I finally got my tops back today. One is damn good looking, and the other...well, looks like a piece of crap....the crap one is a jig for the others I plan on making...if not, oh well. Anywho...

Here are some pics of them side by side. The one on the left is the crappy one...The one on the right was done freakin nice.

The next series of pics show the difference between the 2. The one on the right will fit under the hood, beautifully.

So, to whoever made it down this far without getting frustrated, I am putting the top on tomorrow cause today it started to snow, so I got to wait for the Auto Hobby Shop to open. Anyway, I will be testing this top for fitting and whatnot.

I just got a question to those who are interested...who would like a custom top, angled for better flow, the throat opened up to the size FORD should've made it, for a little over $100?

I talked to the guy that made my top and he said he will do a group buy for us...the catch is we need at least 5 people. With 5 people he will charge $110 and pay for shipping both ways and 10 people $100 plus pay for shipping both ways. He is really interested in doing this for us guys and girls.

If there is any interest for this, or questions about the top, please send me an email to: [email protected]

I am still working with him on the turn around for the tops. But he was saying that he can get about 3-5 tops done a day, depending on his workload, and should be able to ship them out in a couple of days.

I know that he's undercutting a lot of people here that make tops and everything, but a good deal is a good deal...I couldn't pass it up.

I will also be taking to of my intercoolers to him tomorrow to see what he can do for me.

Stephen Furman

PS -- just to let you people know...I'm eating cereal and eggs for the next 2 weeks to cut down on the cost of food so that I can pay for the work that he does. And that work comes to you guys, in a discounted price.

that doesn;t look like it will fit under the stock hood. The angle on the top is too steep and it looks like the upper right corner will hit. I was having problem when i did mine with a 3/4" spacer on the bottom, and it was just barley rubbing. I ended up milling the base at an angle. left to right there is about an 1/8" difference to might it fit nice. Here are some pics, but dont get me wrong...yours could fit just fine, but from the pics it looks like it'll hit.

fastsc92 -- You might be right...but we won't know till tomorrow...hehe...I am also considering having him make a regular type 3/4 inch raised top. The only thing is that I'm already done to eggs and cereal for the next two weeks...I dont want to be down to just bread...w/no butter...but whatever helps the community, im willing...I really need to learn to weld...

I like the looks of that design. I'd probably be down for one. Any idea on the time frame to get these done? I imagine cores would be required correct?

03-02-2004, 05:32 PM
I have 1 core that I can provide, but I would like to use it for one of those people that need their car on the road as soon as possible. Otherwise they send in a core(and money) and the turn around will be around 3-5 days, thats what I'm hoping he can hook me up for.

Time frame to have something other than a prototype out...well, I'm going to the shop today to drop off some intercoolers to him and put the top on. That way, if there is anything wrong with it he can fix it right there. Then test if for a little bit while trying to collect some more tops to get done, then start selling...I wanna say about 1 week..maybe 2...It's really up to him.

Anymore questions? Anymore interested people?

will the welds be grinded down flush?

.... cereal can get freakin expensive....... all depends what kind you buy....... just thought i'd tell yea.......

03-02-2004, 11:11 PM
cause i just cant get the taste of my own foot outta my mouth...:(

I went to bolt it on just a couple of hours ago and....well...he saw that he made a mistake. He is going to be correcting it for me(for free), but can't do it till around the 13th-20th of this month...the only other problem that I have encountered is the bolt hole on the bottom of the top intercooler tube...the tube does need to be turned slightly to be able to fit....that where we run into another problem...

should we ask for the top tube as well? it is so that we can cut the bolt hole off of it. I am still working the details with him on that problem...i have 2 or 3 upper tubes that can be used, but after that, people need to send in some...

The reason that the top didnt fit was cause i made to much of an adjustment to the neck. I was worried about the top being able to fit under a stock hood...I calculated taking about 3/4 of an inch out of the neck and bending it down. Ignorant on my part, yes. Is this a learning lesson, yes. I am giving him my car on the 13th(hopefully) and he is going to correct my miscalculation.

I would like to say that I was wrong in not letting him have my car to begin with to be able to make sure that it was right the first time. This time around though, he is going to mock up from the supercharger to intercooler to make sure that everything fits on a stock SC/XR7. So that after my top, there will be no errors in the production tops. It will bolt right up to a stock upper tube.

If anyone is still going to be interested after the 13th, let me know.

1BADSC -- Right now, I don't know if they will. He did get make the inside welds flush so that there would be no disturbance to the air flow. I will get back to you on that one. There should be no increase in price...not to mention I will be helping him with the product after he welds.

motocross_masta -- I am just a poor airman...I buy the stuff in the bags only. $1.50 a bag...and for the big ones too!:D

Stephen

PS -- It did clear the hood!!

Hate to say I told you so, but.

http://www.sccoa.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=30980

You can cut the tab off the IC tube, but the angle you have is not going to line up as I have stated before. You'll have better luck cutting and rewelding the IC tube than you will trying to modify the top you have. A few of the other guys that have made their own raised tops chimed in to warn you. I have the experience of others to thank for this tidbit of info. Namely Vernon C. Who made his own 1" raised top and had to cut and reweld the IC tube to make it fit, and Wynn (Tbird88) who mitered his tops that he makes on occasion. Wynn’s tops fit without any problems and are probably one of the better looking tops out there.

J57ltr -- I remember you saying that it wouldn't work. I was determined(and still am) to prove the nay-sayers wrong. The guy that I'm working with right now good at what he does. But like I said, I gave him the miscalculation and I wasn't able to loan him the car to make sure everything fit. I will be lending my car next saturday or sunday, and he will be correcting my mistake, and doing a couple of other things. He said he will be able to make it fit without modification to the upper tube but will need my car.

Sorry for the delay everyone, but the issue will be resolved shortly.

Well, I am not a naysayer, simply trying to help you with your design. Since that's what I do for a living (design) you might learn a thing or 2. Without modifying the IC tube it's not going to line up. You only have less than 5 degrees before you you end up so misaligned that, 1 you will end up with a ridge sticking into the airstream or 2 end up with a bend that you are trying to avoid.

ThunderRoad -- Are you making fun of me??:( Leave me alone...I get depressed easily....:p

J57ltr -- Thank you for trying to help me man, I can just be stubborn as heck when trying to get things done, I dont know when people are helping or being mean...I don't think the guy will charge anymore, than what he is right now if we have to modify the upper tube. I will find out what the total cost of everything will be for the top and tube, hopefully not tube, and post it up. Again, thanks for helping...I really need to take a breather...I have been working too hard lately...

I got the top done, finally! I dhould be able to get the other tops done a lot quicker than the I got this one done...I will be going back this weekend to get another one done...Well, Im going to be going there all this week to draft up all the different braces for my car...but we will be getting another top done this weekend.

Here is the some pics of the top...It looks like crap, i know...but the next one that gets done will be a heck of a lot better.

Test fit on the car after I found out that the top wouldn't fit...All you nay sayers were RIGHT!! You like that!! I had to swallow my pride!! hehe:D

This is with the piece welded in.

This is with it all welded up and put into place. It fits!! to the STOCK tube! Yeah buddy! Looks ulgy, but it works.
http://www.angelfire.com/co4/carstuff/images/oncarwelded.JPG

Now, I can garauntee that the next top will not look as bad...He had to fab up the piece on the spot to fit...next time he will have a tube crafted up so it doesn't look like crap.

Again, if anyone wants a top, let me know...I will know the turn around time next weekend..

Two things for [email protected]:

Please either resize your pictures or find someone that can assist you in doing that.

Since this has turned from a discussion of how to make tops into one that involves selling tops, it needs to be reposted in the classifieds like the other for sale ads.

Please post your for sale info in the classifieds or this one will be moved there very shortly.

Tips on pics.

You are trying to take them too close. If you have a Macro function (usually in the menu, or a switch) There will be a symbol that looks like a flower in any case. Use that it's for taking pics less than12" away.

If you can't get the pics to resize then use Paint and use the strech/skew function, and put in 50% on both hor and ver sections. Save it as a different file in a different folder if you like.

It was a little cold in the shop and I had the camera in my pocket...so the heat + cold = condensation...other than that it is a really good camera...2.1 megpixel...and its about the size of a Credit card and about 1/2" thick...its sweet! I have some other pics of the cars he has built from the ground up, and the ones he is restoring...some include the Lotus Esprit, Lotus Elan, and the Triumph TR6...He also has a 1/8th scale of a Lotus something(cant remember name) for the kids, its like a little go kart...its awesome! anyway...
