My mechanic discovered that the leak from under the mastercylinder of my '89 SC 5spd. was from the control unit. When checking the part at the the dealership, he was told $2700 (and he's a mechanic at a Ford Dealership). He found a use part and will put it on today. HOwever, just in case it doesn't work, are there any other options for parts, new or used?

Thanks,

Both SIA and Prior Reman offer rebuilt ABS units and new accumulators. They give discounts to SCCoA members. Links to their sites can be found on the SCCoA Links page off the home page of www.sccoa.com. A search on ABS will turn up a lot of information on this subject.

Duffy Floyd's ABS Article was very helpful explaining our Teves Mark II system. You'll notice on that site that our ABS systems are found on numerous other manufacturers' cars. When I needed a "Pressure Warning Switch" for my 1990 SC(Which should be the same ABS as your 1989), I purchased one at a Buick Dealer for a 1988 Buick Reatta with ABS. It is the same switch that Ford sells for $150.00, but the part isn't available from Ford dealerships anymore as that part has been "Discontinued", but did find it at a Buick dealer for $84.00 for SAME part. Seems GM sells a little cheaper..;) I have part number if your mechanic cannot find it..or like Ggeorge said, give Prior a call if a COMPLETE unit is what you need...

No prob Dave,
GM Part #25530882 "Pressure Switch" (May not show up on "Part # Search) Think they are $84.00 now from http://www.buy-gm-parts.com/
Shipping will run $12 - $25 depending on how fast you want it.

Click on "OEM Catalog" choose "1988 Buick REATTA" and then in the Brakes" section choose "Anti Lock" then "Pressure Switch". OR just email them the part number direct. They shipped it out in two days to me, just UPS took forever.
Email: parts@crowncadillacolds.com OR call Keith at 1-888-337-1094 ext-1127

They may ask for a VIN #, so calling them might work better. Keith will understand if you talk to him and tell him it's for the 89-93 Ford Supercoupe w/ same brake system as the 88 Buick Reatta w/ ABS. Mine has been in and no leaks for two months. Works good!;)

The GM number is in this long thread:
http://www.sccoa.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=38903&highlight=abs

That GM ABS pressure switch is $75 at some online GM parts places. They used the same Teves 2 ABS system. :

1986-88 Buicks Park Aves, centurys and similar models. You might grab their Accumulators too. Make sure they list the Teves Mark II as their brake system.

OR look thru the different GM suppliers at: http://www.parts.com

Just type in : 25530882
and it comes up $75.00

Well... it WAS $75.00.:(
The GM guys heard I needed one for a FORD and the price went up for the next FORD guy, aka: Scott Long...:D Sorry Scott!

Well... the used one didn't work, so I'll be exploring the options mentioned in the posts. Thanks! The mechanic did mention that I should ask whether or not there was a way to simply get a seal kit vs. the whole thing since that seemed to be the problem. If anyone knows, feel free to post.

Swapping parts on the ABS system is going to be an expensive waste of time unless you pinpoint the problem area first. "Control unit" is way to general of a term to be useful in troubleshooting your problem. Likewise to say that the replacement unit "didn't work" is not very helpful.

These systems are very simple actually and have few parts that can go bad.

1) master cylinder itself. This is the main part that you see and it rarely gives any trouble at all. It should be pretty easy to determine if the leak is coming from this unit or not. Typically the only thing that leaks on this unit is the hose that goes from the reservoir. Simple fix.

2) Accumulator. This unit is self contained and if it leaks it can easily be replaced. Another simple fix.

3) Pressure switch. This unscrews from the main body and is replaceable as mentioned above. It can leak causing a big mess when it goes bad. It is difficult to determine if the leak is coming from here or the pump motor as the entire bottom of the unit will be wet from this leak. This is also a simple fix.

4) ABS pump. Ford used to offer a seal kit for the pump, but it has been discontinued.

So unless it is the main unit or the pump that is leaking, the fixes are simple. Worse case, if the two units that you have are experiencing different problems, you can combine parts to make one that works right.

Not to discourage you, but if the Master cylinder ITSELF is what is leaking, which is doubtful, it will have to be professionaly rebuilt in a clean room. On the "used" parts like pressure switches...it usually ends up being more work than to fix it right as I, along with others, have tried a used one and found it not to work. Guess they don't like to sit around a while..and a new o-ring on the end of one usually will not work either, as the switch goes bad INTERNALLY and an O-ring cannot keep all that pressure from seeping down the threads and all over the system...makes a heck of a mess!:(

No I don't, sorry. My parts guy looked it up at the dealership. It's on their system, just not available any more. Someone might have some old stock though.....

The 1988 Buick Reatta "Pressure Switch" is a stright swap, but I am NOT sure on the accumulator. You'd think it would be. Go to Buick dealer and look at the part and compare it to yours...unless anybody else has a suggestion..
