Spare tire cover reinforcement?

Over time, the cardboard cover for my spare tirewell simply has not held up to the stress of objects placed on it. It has bent in the middle, been flipped over, and bent again. This has created an unsightly problem which I would like to fix.

Has anyone reinforced or replaced the cardboard layer covering the spare tire? If so, what did you use? I considered 1/2" ply, but that would undoubtedly raise it above the trunk floor.

Thanks for your input..

I know what you are talking about as mine looks the same way. I may use about !/4" ply to reinforce mine, but you could use 1/2" if you make the reinforcement smaller diameter leaving the lip the stock thickness. John

I will probably either do that or I might acquire some metal bars from the hardware store to form a cross underneath. If I can form a cross using steel or aluminum, it will be stronger and lighter. I simply need to decide how to cross the beams w/o raising one off the other.
