I just replaced the head gasket on my 94 sc (120 K). The HG blew it a safe location and only leaked a little when it was hot. The car runs and idles good now as it did before.
But I'm getting some ticking/tapping now, mostly from the drivers side. It's not supper loud but it is noticable. And the valve train was totaly smooth before.
I followed the Ford rocker tightening sequence exactly.
Started with cylinder 1 on compression stroke and tightened both rocker to 10 lbs. Then rotated 120 degrees to each subsequent cylinder in the firing order to do the same. I made a gauge to wrap around the balancer to precisely get my 120 degree offsets. After torqueing each rocker to 10 lbs on the compressing stroke I rotated the crank about 20 times and repeated the process to tighten each rocker to 22 lbs.
Had a 3-way valve job and resurface. The stock springs were worn, so my builder (highly recomended from the board) replaced the springs with a stiffer set but nothing radical. He said the spring seats would not need any work done for these springs.
So, my question is: When I take it apart again this weekend what should I do different when I tighten the rockers?
Or could the stiffer springs alone be causing this ticking sound?
Is this ticking from too tight or too loose rockers?
thanks for any advise.
