Steering wheel shake

Whenever I approach high speeds (70+) over anything but perfectly smooth road, the steering wheel has a tendency to shake violently in a vertical motion. It probably moves up and down around half an inch each way.

I am aware that the car needs an alignment, but should the steering wheel be transmitting this much vibration in any instance?

did you get new tires..??

your wheels might need balanced. at high speeds 5 ounces off on tire balancing can amount to pounds of weight. shouldnt cost too much... i work at a place where i can balance them myself :)

70-75 is about the speed where imbalances in tires our size start to become significant. I'd try that first.

Excellent, I believe there is an issue with balancing and my tires are worn out. I should be replacing them soon, and they will be balanced then. It sounds like this is definately the source of the problem.

Thanks for the information!
