Speaker buzz

I know it's EMI from the engine, since the buzz varies per the RPM of the engine - but how do you get rid of that? Is it the speaker wire, spark plug cables, or something else?

How old are your plug wires? They may need to be replaced. Also make sure they are suppression wires, not copper.

They're magnacor performance wires, but I don't know how old or in what shape exactly - just got the car and it's been in the shop since day 1.

No.

You may want to check your alternator as well.

This may get a little involved, so follow along:

1. Get your favorite buddy (prefferably two,) to bring their vehicles over
2. Remove battery wires.
3. Hook up a set of jumpers from their vehicle to your battery wires. NOT THE BATTERY, but the wires.
4. Have them start up their vahicle, and rev it. If you don't get any accelerator whine, it's your alternator. If you do, try your back-up buddy, just in case your first buddy's alternator is on the fritz.

If you get EMI whine with both vehicles, then... Plugs and wires. I wouldn't waste my time with inline noise supressors.

Or, it could be that your deck is just too sensitive to EMI, like mine is... Especially if its a Clarion joyride. UGH!
