Odd Startup Idle & Eratic Temp. Behaviour

When I first start the car my idle is pretty lumpy and driveability has deteriorated but once you get goin' it improves. My dad thinks it could be the head gasket ready to go (expands once car gets goin' and heats up and would make it seem like no problem at all). Another thing is that my engine temperature gauge has been heating up. I made the mistake of adding 100% antifreeze (Haynes manual says you can't go over 70/30 mix with water) but I corrected it by adding a 95/5 mix and now the temp. stays fairly stable). The idle problem was there before the temp. thing. However the temp. is still not as stable as it was (takes forever to warm up and still redlines occasionally). What goin' on? Thanks to all who can help
