View Full Version : The weirdest thing happened on the way home tonight!

Just as I was pulling out of the grocery store parking lot, onto Bloor street, I heard glass shattering against the pavement. At first I thought I might have hit a bottle....but then I looked at my driver's side mirror....and it was gone! The glass part of the mirror popped off and smashed on the ground. I went back and retrieved the big peices (don't know what I'll do with them - being a nice guy I guess)...boy was that a shock! Of all the weird things to happen.
Now please tell me I can just buy a new replacement glass! I noticed that the original one is only held on with what looked like clear silicone. Nothing to it. Any ideas?
Jim.

Bill McNeil had the same thing happen to him at Carlisle last year. I'm sure he can tell you where/how to get it fixed.
It is weird though!
Cheers,
Sean

And here I thought you got pulled over for tinted windows....AGAIN! Yes, i'm knocking on wood.
Strange? Yup. Don't have a clue for a fix. Maybe the g/f's compact with some on the Handy Man's Secret Weapon.....duct tape - LOL!!!

My passenger side lopped of last May. All the glue was still on the car but the glass was gone. I went to Speedy auto glass and they cut a new piece.

Jim,
Unfortunately I don't have that information. You see, lucky me it happened when someone was pulling my car out of a shop where my interior had been shampooed and they told me to bill it to them. Sorry! :(

Paul,
What did you do to replace it?
Jim.
Took one off my other car and snapped the whole mirror/backing plate on. ;)

I think I'll give Speedy a call in the morning...hopefully they can help me out. I checked their website and there is no mention of mirror replacement.

Jim,
I bought a new one from Ed. I don't remember the damage.
The Ford unit comes with the plastic housing as well as the glass, all new.

Me too... had it happen on more GM vehicles than Fords though :D
The drivers side is just a regular mirror, and most glass shops can cut you one in about 10 minutes. The last one I replaced was $16 + tax, but that was about 7 years ago. Clear silicone is what the manufacturer uses to glue it on. It helps if you can bring a pattern of the shape in to the glass shop.
The passenger side is slightly convex (you know, "objects in the mirror are closer than they appear"). No glass shop I know has that stuff.

Got it taken care of this morning. Called Speedy @ Dundas and Wolfdale, in Mississauga, at 10:00 AM this morning, and they did a rush order and had it in by 11:15 AM! It was a replacement order....no waiting around to get one cut to fit. The replacement fits perfectly.
Some clear silicone and tape to hold it on till tomorrow morning....oh...and $37 later....all is better. :o
Take it easy!
Jim.
