I got a 89 SC, I tryed to have Ford look at it to see if they could tell me whats wrong with it. They said they only work on 91s and newer! So if you have a 90 or older SC I think you should sell it while it still runs good, before it becomes a nightmare. Even when my car ran good it was only putin up 16 second 1/4 times. For 16s I could have bought a Honda, and I bet it would still run fine after only having it a few months!

Most people don't buy these cars for the purpose of drag racing. That's not a smart reason to buy one of these cars. They can be fun and they can be a pain in the butt. It's too bad you don't live closer, I could help you out with your car and show you that they can be fun, when give attention. Is it a 5-speed? :D

I hear your pain. However, that is exactly they purpose for the existence of this club. In these pages you will find mechanics, engineers, racers, and a lot of plain regular folks who have owned these cars over the years and have no intention of giving them up. Hence "for the preservation and performance" phrase in the clubs mantra. We can't fix your car for you, but we know what is wrong, what will go wrong, and what you can prevent.
If driving a Honda is an option you would seriously consider then an SC may not be the right car for you. Most of us here prefer not to drive anything else. It won't be cheap to make this car fast but time and dedication (another part of the club mantra) can turn your car into an amazing performer.
It's up to you. :)

Thanks for the great words guys. I'm just sick & tired of trying to figure out what is wrong with this thing, it's been siting for two and a half months! I took my car to a shop, they couldn't figure it out. I ask this guy, he says it's the EGR, I ask another guy he says it's the harmonic balancer. I think it's just too rare of a car, and because of that people who really know it are even more rare. I got this car because I had a 96 Buick Regal GS,a front wheel drive 3.8L V6 supercharged. I thought the Thunderbird SC would be better because it a stick, RWD, and intercooled, but I never had a problem with my Regal. I posted a subject in the Technical Forum under SC feels unsupercharged, if you know about SCs please read my post. Any help would be great!

heck cant you just tell them its a 91, arent they pretty damn similar. there werent any major changes over all of the years the supercoupe was produced. i know there were some smaller changes but nothing that i would think would be different on a 89 as opposed to a 93 or so on.

91 ups have different wiring and EEC. Even so, they are going to check before working on it. It's not going to help trying to "trick" the shop you want to fix the car. Then they will just charge you more when they figure it out and probably still won't fix it. I know of an individual with a 95 SC that spent weeks and over $1000 trying to get the dealership to diagnose a similar problem. You can search his saga here on the SCCOA, he posted all the details about it.

i dunno but to me it sounds like they just dont want to mess with it. find another shop that actually wants to work on it.

where are you located that may help someone recommend a knowledgable shop/ mechanic. they are hard to come by. i personal have rerbuilt the entire drive train on my 92. Once even took it to the ford house and let them tinker with it for four weeks! and it ran worse when i picked it up than when i dropped it off. They had the firing order wrong!

If your local ford dealership wouldnt work on it,its a crappy dealership and you dont want them messing with your sc anyway. Its a ford and its there job to work on fords period.Call cust. service in dearborne.Learn your car and fix it yourself. If you would rather drive a honda then you dont need a sc anyway.imho

Here is what I do when I have a problem im stumped on. Take a break from the car. Day or two. Go over the main things like gas lines. I have seen a lot of these cars with crushed gas lines because they run along the frame rail.
Fuel filter. Its best to just have the fuel pressure tested. Next would be spark and timming. Then vacume. look at all the vac lines for cracks or disconnected lines. The last option is to sell it and buy a better one that has less problems. There are still alot of them out there and some can be picked up cheap with minor problems. I just picked up a 93 5 speed with a bad clutch
cheap. Some times setting you heart on a car or that girl that you know you will never get will leave you miserable. Good luck :)

My vote is for you to sell. I too love this car. I work in an auto repair shop and will gladly work on 10 SCs than 1 Honda! The SC is not a car for the average shade mechanic. I rescued mine from the jaws of the crusher. The bigest problem it had was incompentent mechanics. So if you can not fix it yourself or find qualified mechanics, then you need to sell it to someone that will love and pamper this wonderful car! Hondas are pretty much throw away cars. If you decide to keep her, a factory shpo manual is a MUST! Not Chiltons! If you ever need help with a problem, email me or someone in the club.
Happy Motoring!
