Sputter in 3rd @ WOT; Fuel Pump Failure?

Ok, after a few runs with decent power (for stock), I got a crippling sputter that robbed me of all power. I depressed the clutch and released the gas, and it idled fine. Put the car back in gear, and continued to drive (normally) with no power loss or problems of any sort.

This happened once before on the freeway after traveling in excess of 100 for a few minutes, stomped on it, and had a light sputter, but again, no power at all, kinda like the gas was disconnected from the car. No amount of pedal did a darn thing. Let off it for a few seconds, and then continued to drive normally (70-80mph), and the car drove fine.

The more recent experience, described in the first paragraph, made me think that the fuel pump wasn't holding up to it's part of the bargain. But, that's just my uneducated guess b/c I've never had a fuel pump go out on me before.

Any one have a fuel pump go out on them before? What's it like?

P.S. The gas tank was at 3/4 full.
