Auto Tranny Shifter Removal

did a search on the subject and its still confusing. Now, do you or do you not have to remove the "C" clip from the shifter handle to remove it ?
Or do you just push in the button and pull like a madman and hope not to break any thing. I'm not really concerned with breaking anything on the shifter coming off cause it's being replaced because of a a bad button.
thanks for you help, i have the kid coming over tomorrow to try and help him replace it. A picture from a a tech book might help too.

All I can tell you is that the handle does come off by pushing the button and pulling up.

FYI You do have to remove the clip before removing the handle, it came off quite easy once it was removed. I just but the shifter in low gear, giving access to the slot. Then removed the clip with a small screwdriver and that was it.
