I see DOZENS of them on ebay, at RadioShack, BestBuy, everywhere . . . even Walgreens carries them now. Anybody care to recommend a brand? What works BEST or looks good in our Birds? I seem to remember one that was integral with the rearview mirror. They say the higher on the windshield the better. What is everybody using these days??

Do yourself a favor and spend the money on a cb radio. With lazer now they have you when the detctor goes off. i put on about 3500 miles a week and have never had a speeding ticket. Tune to channel 19 and listen. The truck drivers will tell you right were the cops are at. Tim

Okay, after reading all the older threads on detectors it seems the BEST would be the ValentineOne, although, at $400 it would make more sense to just ease up on the go-pedal. I remember a few years ago there was an Ad in PopularElectronics that for about $10 you could get the plans to MAKE a radar jammer from an old microwave oven.

Since my '92SC is in need of a paint job REALLY bad, I am considering making myself completely INVISABLE by painting the car with a thick, gooey coating of rubberized undercoating! The radar/lasar beams would be totally absorbed, and much like the Stealth bomber I would be undetectable to radar!!

:D

CB radios are only good if you do a lot of highway driving. (Like I do).
However they are useless around town, or backroads, or anywhere else you spend 90% of your time.
Get a radar detector. :)

Valentine One or Passport. They seem to vary one from the other depending on the various reviews. Both seem to be as sufficient as the other.

Keep in mind that such devices can often be found at pawn shops for much more reasonable amounts than you might find otherwise.

The only truely great detector is the Valentine One. It has the largest range, the best detection from distance, arrows that are really helpful to let you know where the radar is coming from, and the best feature is the bogey that lets you know how many radar sources are being detected. i will explain why this is a good thing.....

Say you drive the same route everyday and pass, lets say a car dealership, and your detector always goes off every day at the same spot. Now with a normal detector you would learn to just ignore that spot. But lets say you have a Valentine One and are driving down that same road and every day it goes off and lists a bogey count of 2. Now lets say that a cop decides to sit there one day. This time when you go buy your Vanetine One's bogey counter reads 3 or 4. Now you know that there must be a cop sitting there. If you had a normal detector you would never know! Same thing goes for cops sitting on the road and then having a second car a mile or so down the road hidden. The Valetine will let you know there are two cops.

The Passport Escort has a decent range to it as well but it still falls short of the Valentine, and it has no directinal arrows and no bogey counter.

Also do not be fooled. There are no radar detectors that can jam radar, and there are no detectors that can save you from laser detection. None of the current detectors can pick up Laser until it actually hits your car because the beam is so focused, and by then it is too late.

One more benefit to the Valetine is that if they ever come up with something new you can send your detector back to them and they will upgrade it so that you do not have to buy a whole new detector.

and by the way, radar jamming is a very serious felony and comes with huge fines and lots of jail time.
