Jiggly steering wheel

HI all on my 91 i developed a loose or jiggling steering wheel. I remove the steering wheel and found that the play in the steering was coming from the shaft that the steering wheel slides onto. Do i have to change the steering column to get rid of this wobble ? PIcture attached.

well...... if you don't plan on taking your steering wheel off any time soon, the REALLY lazy way to correct this would be to put some kind of filler material in there (epoxy or something softer than steel) NOT JB weld for example. then you can heat the column and use a puller to get the wheel off should you have to in the future. This is a bandaid fix though. If the splines are messed up on the steering shaft, you will eventually have to replace the whole works.

I think you are saying the bearings the steering shaft rides on are worn. You could find a lower mileage colum and swap it. I would think you could replace the bearings.
