With the crank sensor, you just have to make sure the metal vanes are centered in the gap on the sensor. Easiest way to do this is to cut a piece of a matchbook cover, fold it in half, and put it over the vane while you tighten down the sensor.

The official Ford tool is a flexible strip of magnetic tape. Most people use a matchbook cover. The exact distance between the vanes and the sensor do not appear to be real critical. What is imporant is that you manually turn over the damper to make sure the vanes do not hit the sensor.

This info is for the 89-93 style crankshaft sensor.
