A/C Compressor question

I'm putting a new compressor on the engine that will be going into my Tbird, and everything went smooth, until I needed to get the coil clutch (I think that's what it's called, see the picture) off. I'm stumped. I need to pull it off and put the one on from the old compressor because the pulley sizes are different between the compressors. Can anyone help me?

There is a snap ring holding the magnetic coil and pulley assembly on the inner sleeve. Undo it and that whole assembly comes off. The two will need to be compatible in order to swap them and yours looks different from my stock compressor.

I thought it was that snap ring, but hopeing it wasn't it, because I don't have the tool for it. Oh well, an excuse to buy another tool. :) The picture is of the new compressor. The only difference between the two, besides the pulley, is the clutch coil is a slightly larger diameter and isn't as, well, beefy as the SC one. The new one is almost 3/4 the width of the Super Coupe one.

Thanks for your reply.

Usually, you can work a snap ring off with 2 small flat tip screwdrivers. You pry up the end with 1 screwdriver and insert the 2nd to hold the ring out and up slightly.. then repeat till you work your way around.

The pulley is held on with a snap ring and the coil is held on with a press fit. You can use a 3 jaw puller to remove the coil. You will probably need the old coil to match the 8 rib pulley. Most SCs have the 16 spline shafts and clutch hubs to match. If you have a 21 spline compressor you will need to use a 21 spline clutch hub that matches your 8 rib pulley. The clutch hub that I have used successfully is Ford part # F3DH-19D786-AA. Also you will have to set the air gap of the clutch to pulley at between .018 -.033 inches. Just add bushing from Motorcraft bushing kit # YF1583A if you need more.

Here is a picture of the clutch

I am using a 94 Cougar V6 6 rib pulley compressor (FS-10) mounted 180 degrees to get the inlet/outlet block on top. This required me to reused my 8 rib pulley and coil but keep th Cougar clutch hub as it matched the spline on the shaft. I had to add a few bushing to get the correct air gap. This compressor has been in use for a few years with no problems. Basically any rear inlet/outlet FS-10 compressor can be used on a SC if you convert it to 8 rib.

EDIT: Nevermind, I figured out what you were talking about, I'll just put the old compressor back on, and save this one as a spare.

Thanks,

Bob
