View Full Version : Sad day in the SC game.....

Well, today I raced my best friend in his 1988 Mustang GT 5.0.........he has a full flowmaster exhaust, intake, and headers......Automatic.....I thought I should be able to take him, but when we took off, right off the bat he popped to 2 car lengths ahead of me, i started catchin up a little in 3rd, but pretty soon we were out of room......Alright, aside from the fact that I have a five speed, and they are not good for taking off the line, I need to know what I should do next........I have gears, intake, plugs, and wires........On my list to do here within the next month or so is a 10% pulley, remove the resonator and put 40 series flowmaster mufflers on, and put underdrive pulleys on.....What else should I get, remember, im 17, and dont have that much money to blow........

exhaust, 10%, homemade blower top, and upgraded fuel pump ($83 for a 190)

Alex don't forget your motor is starting to get tired. It has 170,000 miles doesn't it!?

Hey, so how was your personal performance:
Average, below, above, or superior!

That's the FIRST starting point.
The car is SECOND !

Learn to launch and then only, take it for granted !
How do you or we, know, whether you lost because
you didn't launch properly???

You should practise it and do it flawlessly, BEFORE
dragging even your own mother, lol ! OK ! (!)

Well it sounded like a short race, in your case you need the boost off the line so i recomend some gears and some drag radial tires for traction.

Jamie--Just hit 130,000 miles.....

Virgil--My launch was actually awesome, i launched at like 1700, got a little wheel spin not much and took off pretty good, but it will take some more practice to get it down as well as humanly possible.

NoCar--I already have gears, and im gonna get an extra 2 wheels and put some slicks on there one of these days

you have to remember alex, a mustang is 1000lbs lighter then your car and it does not have IRS, which gives it a much bigger advantage over IRS.

Hmm a mustang isn't that much lighter then a S/C or a V8 MN12..

My car with a full tank fo gas, ect weighs like @1850kg and what do i have comapred a mustang? ALOT MORE.. what does your brother 'stang weigh, jeremy, 1700Kg <3500-3600lbs?>?

Also with the above mods the stang has, it should have equal too if not a HAIR more then a '94 S/C..

Can I beat my buddy’s Mustang?
This one comes up all the time. This answer assumes both the Mustang and
the SC/XR7 are stock. When either car is modified, that car can have a huge
advantage and win handily. Most of the time the Mustang in question is a Fox
body 87-93 5.0L. Throughout these years the Mustang made 225HP and
300ft-lbs of torque. That is exactly 15 more HP than the 89-93 SC/XR7, but
15ft-lbs of torque less. So, for comparative purposes, both motors have
approximately the same power output, but they make it differently. The
SC/XR7 will excel in races from 0-60mph whereas the 5.0L will excel in races
from 60+mph. Consider the fact that the Mustang GT weighs 500lbs less than
the SC/XR7 and Mustang LX’s weigh even less, it can be a tough challenge.
Sometimes the SC/XR7’s beat the 5.0L, but I would say more times than not
the Mustang will have the advantage. Keep your races short and sweet and off
the highway and you’ll do much better.
One exception to the “highway” suggestion is in regards to top speed. Even a
stock SC can easily exceed 140 to 145 mph. When driving at these speeds
aerodynamics play a big part in the performance of your vehicle. Hands down
the SC and XR7 have smoother aerodynamics and a lower coefficient of drag
than a Fox body Mustang. We don’t encourage this type of behavior, but you
will outrun a Mustang, in almost all cases, in a top speed contest.
The 94-95 5.0L engines made slightly less power at 215HP and 285ft-lbs of
torque and were found in the last year of the Fox body and the first years of the
SN95 body. These cars might be a bit easier to handle in stock trim. Also
consider the fact that automatic transmissions won’t put as much power to the
ground than manuals. But there is no sense in fooling yourself, Mustangs lay
down quicker times in stock trim. The cars are a close match though and driver
ability can make a big difference on who wins.
The 94-95 Super Coupe flat out makes more HP and Torque than any fuel
injected Mustang GT up to 1998. So, with only weight differences to worry
about, the 94-95 SC has a much better chance of winning more times than not
in a race.

Hey, Alex, good to hear...but yeah, you gotta
practise and master SC handling before you want
to be too confident or over aggressive in doing
such things.... I found doing slaloming on my own
over the years, taught me tons. And now it's in
fashion...! Presently, my learning of curve handling
on a bike, brings transportable experience into my
handling the auto etc.

Practise on your own for those prior mentioned 2
reasons: Your personal skills development, and
secondly, to know the capacities plus limitations
of your auto...

As Jeremy's post proves, those two go hand in hand
in accomplishing mastery of this subject matter!

As an aside, the '93 Coug I owned, I mastered as to
its capacities, plus had it at its matured modded
state, and already possessed superior car driving skills, before one day deciding to put it all to the
test, such that, the highlight of my street
experience was to absolutely smoke a new Cobra
both from the launch and into about a one mile
all out drag... (Man, was he pissed off!!!)

Before attempting it, I had no clue where my Coug
positioned itself on the street. That defining
moment established confidence to thereafter
both, know when I was interested to step on it,
or when, I didn't have to prove anything further...

PS: I left out a strong personal opinion, yet not
fully matured, but having enough substance to
throw in our ring for ongoing reflection plus
discussion: The role of the extra weight in SC's !

I believe it HELPS us in dragging, in slaloming, etc.
Why? Because it gives us both better plus faster
traction than most opposition, who are disadvantaged by less weight !

In handling any and all g'forces in vehicle maneovres
the rear weight gives the rear wheels more pressure
that translates directly into the tread, thereby
gripping the road better. That extra weight-edge,
gives the role of friction an added boost to assist
performance handling for the driver.... This analysis
could go on, but that is the drift of my reflection,
at this time...

Hey, thanks for all that info Jeremy, it was actually really interesting, and Virgil I will take your advice starting when I get my car back from the tint shop (had 5% in the back 3 and 35% in the front 2, decided to go 5% all the way around). Thanks guys for the informative posts!
