Very weird alternator problem

I'm having a weird problem, when the car is cold and I first start it the voltage is a steady 14.0 After a few minutes, it starts jumping around - it goes to 12.5 for a few seconds, then 13.6 for a few seconds and keeps going back and forth. Then after some more time has passed, it quits working completely.

After the car has been off for a while, it goes back to the steady 14.0 volts. Well I can't drive it very far because at the end of the trip the alternator has quit working. The car died on me the other day after a 50 mile trip.

I'm not sure what the problem is, could it be the regulator?

It's the regulator. That is built into the alternator. Most rebuilders can rebuild that alternator if no other issues are found.

It's an expensive REMAN alternator. I took mine to a rebuilder that due to the issues just gave me a rebult alternator but it was 1/2 the cost of a parts store replacement.
