Just as the title says... must I remove the entire radiator to install a double intercooler. I really don't want to do all that work, just to install a fan and double IC. I have done a search, and my answer really wasn't answered.

Can't I just remove the factory IC, put the pusher fan on the double IC, and then install the double IC?

..Scott,no you don't have to remove the radiator...you will have to remove the rubber IC bellows that fits btw the old IC and the support and you will probably have to shave the IC support to allow for the x-tra width of the dbl IC..pretty straight forward deal.

I did this the other night, and had to a little modifiying. Get the old IC out along with the rubber boot or whatever that is. I knew I would have to shave some of the bracket so did that first. Then did a test fit to see if anything else would have to shaved.

Like z90sc said, pretty straight forward deal. I also recommend a set of tbird88 IC gaskets while your there. From what I've seen, they are better than the RTV sealant and are reuseable :D

I'm not sure if your going to get a pusher fan to fit with the dbl IC, besides that a puller (mounted on the engine side of IC) would probably cool it better. I didn't need to remove my radiator, but I did have to trim part of the radiator bracket where the bellows attach to have enough space to fit the thicker IC.

David, what did you use to trim the rad bracket? I'm going to attempt a double IC installation in the hotel parking lot tomorrow (borrowing one from a fellow SCCoO member tonight), and am trying to figure out what tools I'll need.

thx,
Ed N.

I have seen a puller fan on a double IC I thought. I might be mistaken, but oh well. If that doesn't fit, I will make the fan a pusher! Either way doesn't really bother me. Before I attach the fan to the IC, I will test fit it. If it works, it works, if not... I will make it a pusher.

I appreciate the help. I would have been pretty pissed if I tried to remove my radiator! hehehe

Yes, I have heard that the support bracket will need to be "shaved". :)

If I run into trouble, I will post information!

Korn, are you installing a premade double or having it made? Mike Puckett's going to show/help me install one and he's looking into getting the welds done. Are you having someone nearby do that?

Ed,

I used a high speed cutting wheel but I think a hacksaw will also work.

A puller will fit and that's what every IC fan I've ever seen was. It pulls air thru the IC like the fan on your radiator.

I am buying mine from Bill McNeil. He has/had one and I told him I would buy it for 430 shipped. However, he hasn't replied back to me yet, for my shipping information.

Yeah, Mike and I talked the other day and we discussed that. I wish I had a spare IC laying around, or I would do that with you guys. However, I don't have an extra IC and just want this to be done. I am the type of person that will pay more money to buy something already made, than waste time in building it for half the cost. That is just me! hehe Sorry!
