Starter engaged too long when starting

Yes I have changed the selinoid and the starter to fix the problem but it seems that it has not fixed the problem.

When I start the car the starter seems to stay engaged for about twice the time I have the key in the start position? Are these two related?
My car has always seemed to turn over slow compared to other SC's, so sometimes the starter stays engaged for up to 5-6 seconds after the motor is running. It makes a terrible noise but does not seem to do any damage to the starter drive or the flex plate teeth?

Any help would be great.

The only components (apart from the starter and solenoid) that could cause this problem are the starter relay and ignition switch. If you connect a 12v test light or voltmeter first to the small terminal on the relay and then to the big terminal (that is connected to the starter, not the one to the battery), you will see what is causing the starter to run after the key is released.
