I need to try to get this fixed today or I probably won't be able to run in the autocross tomorrow. The leak is coming from the boot that cover the tie rod and connects to the rack itself. Can I take a boot off at the end that is clamped to the rack without breaking a seal? I'm guessing there's a shaft that is coming out of the rack connecting to the tie rod and a seal were that shaft comes out of the rack is what's leaking. If so can this seal be replaced without disassembling the rack?

Thanks,

Kurt

Kurt, that accordian boot is merely a dust cover, you can remove it NP. Your best bet is to try some Lucas PS stop leak-it worked to stop a leak in THE SAME PLACE on my Mark VII, for over 2 years. You cannot service that outer pinion rod to tie rod seal without removing the rack AFAIK. Nick or some of the other guys may know better though.

The Lucas is ~$7, try it and maybe you'll get lucky like I did. It will swell the seals up a bit, and if the entire rack is on the way out anyway, no harm done. It didn't hurt my PS pump in my Mark FWIW.

Exactly it is just that a dust cover and nothing else. If it is leaking then your rack needs to be rebuilt or replaced. I would try that Lucas, it cannot hurt.

Well for the short term fix, as in I will be able to race tomorrow, I just draned the boot/secondary resevior. ;) If it can't hurt I'll try the recommended stop leak potion.
It probably doesn't matter anyhow since I also put a 10% pulley on today and will blow my car up soon. On a short test a few minutes ago I found that it jumps up to 10psi with just a little throttle. I only did one full throttle run into the higher rpms, 2nd gear to just over 4,000, and only saw about 12-12.5psi so maybe there is some hope. :o
