Rear End bracket

I have a 93 5 speed SC one day i put it in reverse and the bracket that holds the chunk sheared in two. since then i made my own bracket which seems to have fixed the problem? is this a common problem and if so what caused it? is it possilbe the car just has too much power? Should i stop adding more?
