Heater induced power failure

This morning I turned the heater on for the first time this year. The car stumbled, then the idle evened out, so I didn't get too concerned. But then later the car died at an intersection, it totally lost power for a second. I turned the heater off and drove to work without any problems.

Could something in the heating system cause an intermittent electrical failure?

An electrical problem should have blown the fuse. You can first unplug the blower motor and then the blower motor speed controller (which is just below the blower motor, behind the glove box), turn on the heating, and see if the problem reoccurs.
I don't know if a leaking vacuum hose for the climate controls could cause this problem. If you have the electronic climate control with an LCD display, then you cannot just shut off the vacuum supply and try to turn on the heating because the electronic control reads the blend door position and will then give an error message.
Try the A/C, vents, different blower speeds, etc. and tell us if you have the same problem.
