we cant get past the windows password at startup someone put in a password and we dont know it the person left and we need to know if there is a way to get past it or put in new one we need the files that are on this main computer .

This may help - The person who installed the OS would have used an administrator's password.

If you just need to access files, you could use NTFSDOS from www.sysinternals.com. Just create a boot floppy with the program on there, and network drivers, then you can copy the files off that system to another one.

Maybe - lots of folks will leave this blank. Not sure if XP allows that though...

IF, and thats a big IF, you can get into the system, this site can help you crack that individuals password.

This site has l0phtcrack. When I was in the Military as a Network Security Specialist, we used that program once a quarter to break passwords by bruteforce. Great program. It broke my password in 15 hours on level 4 bruteforce.

On this site there are about 5 pages of password cracking applications.

I will continue to look for more programs if you need me too. Hopefully this helps you.

I've also found that pulling the hard drive and putting in another system as a secondary drive an effective method of getting at that data. I've done that for people several times who either managed to screw up themselves or had someone leave "unexpectedly".

If the system is a member of a domain then you should be able to manage the system remotely from the server and reset any passwords you want.

Aww, come on, that wouldn't be as fun. :D But it does work.

Ok i got an easy fix for this,

Boot up in SAFE MODE by pressing f5 or f8 during boot, then select safe mode, then it will bring you to the log on screen the admin account will be unlocked by default, then go in to the users tab in the control panel and make your new password for the account that is locked.

Thats it, no fancy program, Bill always leaves us holes, thats why it should be be called Winholes, or maybe even Winblows.

I had a very similar problem, and called up Microsoft. The lady got a really "inconvenienced" tone in her voice, but what she said was: do a google search for "windows XP administration password" and it pulled up about 10 articles that all said the same thing. . . . funny thing is I dont recall what it did say.

Long story made short: Look it up on Google, and theres valid info on it.
