I just posted a classified for some n.o.s. SC wheels and steering wheels I've got, and thought I'd give a hi-dee-ho to the forum. My father and I have two Super Coupes that are pretty special. They are new:
1989, Black w/red leather, 5-speed, EVERY available option including all-weather Michelin tires, only 28 original miles, never dealer prepped.
1990 35th Anniversary, 5-speed, EVERY available option, 92 original miles, never dealer prepped, still has cosmoline on the paint.
If anybody who's doing a restoration would ever like access to either of these cars for reference (no charge, this isn't a solicitation :p ), feel free to drop me a line at ricks@npdlink.com Take it easy!

Hello and welcome. Sure sounds like a real nice pair of SCs you and your dad have. Maybe you should dust them off and bring them to a couple car shows.

Yeah, that's pretty amazing. Glad to see there are still some "unknown" folks out there who really value these cars and have something special. :D

Well, before I get ragged on for never driving them, my mom bought a blue '89 5-speed new and drove it for over 100,000 miles. She still has it, though it's been "retired". These other cars are for posterity, when all the others are trashed or restored using whatever parts could be accessed, there will at least be a couple that can be referred to and available as benchmarks, and enjoyed as examples of "what it was like when these things sat in the dealership showroom". Getting them to shows is just a matter of schedule and timing. We've got alot of cars, and we go to plenty of shows. It depends on the show as to what we bring. We've never really had an opportunity that lent itself to dragging out one of the SC's. My email is here, so if there's ever any events in the Southeast (I'm in Florida), pop me a note. Also, if anybody here does the Silver Springs show in January (I put on that show, over 1,000 Fords and Mustangs of all years), our collection is open for viewing the Friday before the show.
Oh, and for anybody wondering "why Super Coupes", the '89 my Dad special-ordered new. He has a factory supercharged 1957 T-bird, commonly known as "F-birds" (F-code for the supercharged engine). Very rare, a little over 300 made, and maybe 100 or so left in existance. Anyhow, it is black with a red interior. When Ford announced it would be producing a supercharged Thunderbird, dad wanted one in the same colors to match his '57. The '90 was dad's girlfriend's idea.
Another cool thing: One of our family friends worked for Ford as a systems manager, and got us into the Ford prototyping facility (the old Continental plant) to see the new Super Coupe in it's development mule form in June of 1987. I sat in a fully assembled, hand built, very cobbled together and rough around the edges, mechanically complete and running Super Coupe in '87!

Welcome to the forums. :)
I'm of mixed emotions when I hear about cars that have been stored since new such as your two SCs. It's nice to see a preserved example of a great car, but it's also a bit of a shame that you haven't experienced the fun and enjoyment of driving the cars ... that's why they build them with wheels and an engine. ;) :D
cheers,
Ed N.

I got plenty of hard-charging seat time in my mom's '89, so I didn't miss out on anything. And when you're talking about a car that was produced in the tens of thousands, holding a couple back to be perfect long past when most of the others are gone and forgotten isn't any biggie, in the big picture. Just imagine how many have been driven into the Ford crash-test wall with less than 10 miles on the odo, and our two units not moving don't seem so bad. :p ;)

I attend the Silver Springs show each year in my SC, along with a small contingent of SCCoF ( please check out our chapter now & then; http://www.sccoa.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=60 ) members that's growing each year. We'll have to see if we can get together and see your collection on the Friday prior if possible. Can you order some warmer weather for this year?
Glad you registered here! Only question has to be; What took ya so long?
Seriously though, those are remarkable cars you have there, I'm NVS. ;)

I have to agree with Ed here 100%. I like the idea of storing a car, but thats not what it was intended for. For example the 2000 Mustang Cobra R. Most of those cars made it to climate controled garages with a lucky few actually used as race cars. I for one, am going to buy a Cobra R in a couple years and race the hell out of it. I dont care if it was stored and has 0 miles on it or a few thousand. I will autocross and club race that thing to death.

I will autocross and club race that thing to death. And if everybody on the planet were of like mind, nothing would be left. Boss 429's and 302's, Shelbys, Hemi Mopars, anything and everything that was special and historic, would be just pictures in books and memories, because the people who used them back then saw them as little more than useful appliances. I'm not condemning your plan at all, go for it, there's plenty of R's out there getting raced hard, and yes, that's what they were built for. But don't condemn the folks that are literally "jumping on the grenade", making the sacrifice and having the will-power to keep a few nice (AND SAFE) so if the rest get destroyed and totalled on the track, something's left behind for the kids to look at and ogle. It's an object. Whatever gets done with it is fairly irrelevent, as long as it doesn't get destroyed for no good reason other than laziness or neglect. Racing is a GOOD reason to whip on a car!!

Oh I wont be lazy or neglecting my '00 Cobra R one bit. I'll baby it everywhere but have lots of fun with it on the track. I am not into trading paint, I like to race clean. Prolly the only thing that would touch this car will be a few cones from autocross.
I am not saying storing cars is a bad thing, I just would not be able to hold back the urge to just even drive the thing and enjoy it cruising the streets.

I agree, first priority is to always have a driver/fun car. After that, it gets easier....

I'm with 69bossnine on this. How special those cars are, and will be even moreso as time goes by. There are plenty of cheap driver SC's around to enjoy and drive. What bothers me the most is someone that parts out a nice condition SC just because it has blown hg's and no decent selling value, but more immediate value as parts. Anyway, nice to have you aboard boss. John
