View Full Version : Frame off restoration of my own. What else is going on?

I just made a deal with my cousin to purchase a 1990 Mustang GT from him later this year for C H E A P! The good thing about this is that I can literally buy everything new for this car piece by piece. The car is not in that bad of shape, but I plan to restore the car like new over a period of three years. The Saleens of those years were really nice looking, so I am thinking about making a replica by using a kit. There will be no need for the car to be fast or anything extraordinary, so I will work off a cheap budget. My daughter turns sixteen this year, so maybe this will be something for her to destroy as she attends college.
Does anyone else have anything planned, or already on the burner? What projects are underway?

Lets see, the interior is shaping up nicely...
Two new black leather/grey suede racing seats, grant steering wheel, new black carpet, chrome floor plates, new pedals, shift knob, RCI 4 point cam-lock harnesses, custom roll bar, custom center console with grey suede shift boot and ebrake boot. 7" widescreen monitor in the dash, grey suede headliner, back seat delete re-covered in black leather/grey suede, door panels covered in grey suede/black leather, removed the interior door latches and have a push button exit now, all new digital gauge dash from cyberdyne to match the a-pillar digital gauges... Dash re-covered in black leather with grey suede accents, rear sail panels also covered in black leather/grey suede, custom speaker covers, sub box recovered also, new custom sub grills (for ther 4 mtx 10's), entire interior including roof covered in dynamat...
Thats my project for the end of winter and its nearing its end...

Tazer!!! I don't know which is more impressive: You type faster than I can read! Geez that was fast. I have been looking forward to more pictures of your bird, but I did not think there was much more that could be done to that car. :D
I have a few things on the back burner the the winter. Ryan Harris underdrive pulleys, Dirty Dog 27-2800 stall converter, racing seats, fiberglass hood, manual steering box with skinny wheels and tires out front, and stick the battery in the trunk. Maybe a zex nitrous kix and a 4:10 gear too. I am waiting for Uncle Sam to anti- up my tax return. Wish I could swing a better blower tis year bit it dont look good, Maybe if I sell the wifes Crown Vic? :D

Frame Off!!!! Now there's a term thrown around way to loosley. When you get the body off that '90 Mustang, take a picture of it. Nobody here has ever seen one, so it will be educational for all of us.

yea that Vic can have a frame off, but I'd like to see a SC with the frame off also, im guessing a front and rear subrame attached to a couple of shredded sheet metal ribs with nothing in the middle would look like the cars was in a wreck :D

Yes, a true FRAME-OFF would be performed on a much older car with an actual "Frame", but I will be taking the Stang down to the bare minimun. :)
Anyway, this tread was not meant to debate how smart we all are. I was only wondering what else is in the mix?

Frank,
Isn't the fox mustang a uni-body? If so you can exactly just lift the body off of it.
As for my project I have my eye on a 99 SVT Cobra engine to drop in my 35th. I am going to put the same internals from an 03/04 cobra in it and supercharge it. May take me alittle past this year to complete though.

Yeah I saw that you posted that right when I got done typing in my reply. We must have been typing at the same time.
Oh, I should have the cobra motor in a few weeks.

It's my fault, I go around my friend "Uncle Bob's" shop and he is into restoring classics. He will be helping me on this project and letting me borrow his shop and tools. He does actual "Frame-Off" restorations. A mustang has not had an actual "frame" for many years. (I think 1978?) :D
Anyho, your project sound really interesting. I wish we could get others to share what's going on behind shop doors during this bitter winter I am having. :o
Frank if I have the money to do it the way I want I will use a manual rack, mustang spindles and bolt pattern. Then a set of alumimun 15 inch wheels with a set of 3.5 wide inch tires. Summit has them forr around $125 a copy. Needless to say it is not going to be for going around corners fast. Lower the front end and it should look pretty good. I want to use skinny tires so it steers better with the manual rack. Lighter is faster.

That's what I was thinking Tim. I would need to just find skinnies that would fit my stock hubs. I have too much money in my car, and any other way would be too expensive.

I don't think Mustang's ever had a full frame, Frank.
Frank that is not a problem. Get a set of the aluminum mini-spare wheels. They look great and are a direct bolt on, put a set of baby moons on them and a set of narrow tires and you are good to go. That is is my alternate plan if the cash gets low. I was even thinking the aliminum wheels with baby moons painted the same color as the body. I watch Boyd coggington on T.V. Chop the top shorten the car. Get rid of the door handles. Man the drugs the dentist gave me are good!! :D  :D

LOL TIME!!! The aluminum spares have been mentioned here and there, but I have never seen them before. Holy Cats! Don't they have a top speed rating of 45mph???

WOW Frank! You must be rich and loaded with money! You can actualy afford to build 2 cars at once? hmmmmmmmm...........
Its the pukey tires that have the speed rating not the wheels. Day Sly used the steel spares and put real tires on them. If you painted them and put some baby moons on it would prodably look ok. I just thought the aluminum would look better and be lighter. I just have to see how the money goes to make a decision on which way I want to go. The manual steering rack is a for sure thing. The other benifit is that with the pump and all the other stuff out of the way I should be able to reroute the lower intercooler tube away from the exhaust. I use the car on weekends to put around with and drag racing. For me lighter and simpler is better.

UH yeah OK Frank. All I know is that you and Fred adopted me as your brother several months ago. Since then you've dumped your wife(so you dont have that financial drain anylonger). You and Fred have bought a rollback and have been hooting it up riding around the countryside scareing all the local rednecks by caseing there property for cars to buy(another indication of money) while enjoying wasting expensive fire extinguishers by spraying each other down as you drive through said countryside. You then proceed to employ aliens to soup up your SC which we all know costs cubic dollars(just look at the budget for the cost of upkeep at there favorite hangout, AREA 51!!!!) and now you're doing a complete rebuild of a Mustang you just purchased. Do you see a pattern here Frank? Huh? :p
Anyway the point is you and Fred are living the high life while I(your other brother) am sucking hind tit.
My feelings are hurt! :(
Not to mentioned you have spoiled the Christmas seasons of the future for me by posting that emotionaly scarring picture of Frosty the Snowman!
For the love of God Frank I cant eat soft serve anymore!!!!! :(

Seriously though, I am B R O K E now, and I live from payday to payday. Working with fred and collecting junk cars around the country-side is seldom rewarding for me. Fred tosses me a dog-bone every now and then. HP Performane is paid %100 in full, but I will be sipping soup for a while. I wish I could have some of that hind tit! :(

Thanks Damon! I have owned about six Stangs, but stripping one down to the bone and putting it back together will be a challenge. I look forward to it, but I am going to take it slow. I will make this one last for quite a while while I lick my wounds from the Turbo project and recover financially. :D

Well Frank they claim its cheaper to keep her, but I'm not sure.
Would you be willing to trade lives? :p
Soup sounds damn good to me, pond water just lacks a certain flavor and filling feeling in your belly. I bet you even have some honeys that would be willing to feed you. ;) Are there any good overpass's or train bridges around your area where a guy can flop and hang around? Are you in a mountainous region of Virginia? I love mountains being a hillbilly and all. :)

SHOOT yeah I live in the mountains with a bunch of hillibillies. :D They are usually some really good people that don't bother anybody. Fred and I were out looking for cars when this guy in the middle of the woods had a small shack he lived in. There was a sign beside the front door that said:
"TRESSPASSERS WILL BE SHOT! THAT GOES FOR YOU TOO COPS!"
So it's simple: Fred and I mind our own business and since you are our brother now, we will let you knock on the doors! :D
Hey you guys can move in up here. My neighbors already look at me funny, the more the merrier. Illinois is a lot closer to New Mexico too. I have a lot of good friends that are hillbillys but we dont have a lot of hills mostly lakes ,snow and a really good dragstrip. :D

I KNOW THOSE KINDS OF PEOPLE TOO!!!! LOL!!!!!!!!
I know just how to handle them Frank. Now this is going to require some role playing abilities of all 3 of us. Are you guy's sure you're up to this? Things could get abit hairy if either of us fall out of our roles, so things could be alittle dangerous. Dont worry though I wont let any harm come to either one of you because Matilda has never let me down. However if she does have no fear because Brutus will have our backs. ;)

Last time I talked to ILIKEJUGS he was living in Kentucky. He told me he was going to build a 10 second motor home to pull his 10 second S.C. Now I let the cat out of the bag HE is the guy that has the turbo S.C. It has two turbos on it now and rumor has it he is going to put two more on it. If he does he will be my new hero, I may even move down there!! I think Randy built his intake biy dont tell anybody its a secret!
Its only 500 feet above sea level here. I guess we could build a small hill in the back yard for Mike if it will make him feel more at home. I know the local farm and fleet has bid overalls so all you you guys should be able to get a wardrobe. The truck stop up the road sells straw hats and the cirarette store in town has Red Man. What more could you ask for? And Pro Street Rich live right up the road if you need any parts he has plenty.

Aint no way! We would'nt let people like him live in our state. Come on down anytime Tim, we'll just pull out another bail of hay and get you your own little brown jug. You'll have to get your own bibs, but we'll drive you over to the farm store so you can get'em. They got a nice selection of Dickies,Keys and Carhart bibs for all ocassions. I preffer Carharts for my Sunday dress myself plus the gals seem to like them better, they even take them big city cards like Visa and Mastercard for you more sophisticated types. :D
