View Full Version : Anyone who met Steve Whiteley...

Steve Whiteley isn't exactly a household name on these boards. In fact he's never registered to post here on the SCCOA nor does his member page have any pictures or a mod list for his car. But as SCCOA member #1476 you can tell he has been around for several years, he has been a regular at Carlisle, and also participated in the 2003 and 2004 SC Shootout where he won the Pro ET Class with his beautiful blue and silver 1990 SC.

Personally I was amazed at what he had accomplished with his car. He went from knowing nothing about these cars a couple years ago (in fact knowing nothing about cars is general really) to having one of the most highly modified (and best looking!) SC's around.

Steve was a people person and I think anyone who met him would agree with that. He was completely enthusiastic both about his SC and the people he met at the events he attended. I was taken with his genuine enthusiasm not only for the car but also for the people who make up the SC community.

From meeting Steve and working with him on his car over the months since the shootout, I would have never guessed that he was losing the battle with cancer even as we made plans for a new round of mods for his SC.

Steve passed away on Jan 23, 2005, and his wife Elizabeth has asked me to extend a special thank-you to this community. She has told me that Steve had never been happier than he was over the past 2-3 years while he was building his SC and that the friends he made through this club and the events he attended meant a lot to him.

Here are a couple shots of him abusing his beautiful SC.

I didn't know Steve, but always bad news to hear of a member passing on. Please send my most sincere condolences to Steve's family and Elizabeth..

BTW, maybe George Davenport can upload those pictures of Steve's SC and maybe a picture of himself (Steve, not George) on the "Members Remembered" next to Adam.

I also didn't know Steve, as I don't know many members on this board personally. But i do hang out here often, and the members seem like a tight knit group. I'm sorry to hear about Steve losing to cancer, and my condolences go out to his wife and family.

If i may suggest one thing....maybe feature his SC as the front page SC of the month for February in his rememberance. God Bless.

Damn...I am at a loss for words right now. I met Steve at Carlisle 03 and immediately considered him a friend. We had hung aroud at WFC last year and he and I spoke on the phone and E-Mail a few times over last summer while he was putting his motor back together after the head cam swap. He was one of the nicest people I have ever met.
When my alternator went out when some of us were getting ready to leave the Shootout last year I was trying to find another one to swap out so I could get home. Steve had an extra alt he was carrying with him that he loaned me to help me out. He was a great guy.

Steve was the guy in the red shirt in the group photo above.

I'd like to send my condoleces. I'm rather new to the boards and have never met him. But in part I understand his familys loss. My family had lost someone in this manner and its never a nice disease to watch take someone.

Like Tony, I met Stephen at Carlisle '03. Being in the same class, Steve and I were parked side by side one day, and although his car was sporting a different paint scheme at the time, it still stood out with the 20" wheels!

From the short introduction, I knew he was a great guy. It's sad to hear that he's no longer with us.

My condolences to Stephen's wife and the rest of his family.

David, if you're in touch with Stephen's family, and if you learn of any way that we might be able to help, please let us know. I'd be willing to volunteer to assist with the effort.

Sincerely,

Sean

My first run at the shootout was along side Steve. He pulled over to the side of the track after a few seconds causing me to get concerned and stop as well...he had a hose unplug. :) He plugged it back on and raced the day away. I recall a time in the parking lot when he was showing a bunch of us his SS plates and whatnot that he made, and was offering to give some to us SCers and didnt want to charge anything! He was a very friendly and high spirited guy. You are missed Steve.
Heres a couple pics I have of his engine bay from the shootout.

Really sorry to hear about Steve, my condolences go out to his wife and family. I didn't know him either, but it was only yesterday I noticed his SC in the 2005 MN12 calander while at Anthony's house for a get-together, and a few people mentioned what a nice guy he was when they met him at Carlisle...

Dave,

That is terrible news...I first met Steve at WFC and really got to know him better at the Shootout in Norwalk. He and his wife were two of the nicest people I've ever met.

I remember how when it started raining at the dyno portion of the meet Steve and his wife Elizabeth went back to the hotel and brought their trailer and a dining area tent back to keep everyone dry. Then they started cooking hot dogs and chile...just incase anyone was hungry.

I'm really gonna miss them.

He was an awesome guy.

man, this sure is the worst kind of thing to start your day with. :( i met steve at the 04 shootout in norwalk and was immediately impressed with his car and the obvious time and effort he had put into it. the way he helped out by bringing that tent out on the dyno day and helping tony with his alternator sunday when his went out showed just a small part of the kind of person he was. the sc community has lost a great person and he will be missed. my sincerest condolences go out to steve's family.

I remember Steve at Carlisle, He was in need of a set of 13" front brakes really bad. His 20" wheels showed his stock brakes. Bill Evanoff remembered seeing a set of T-Bird spindles in the swap meet and offered to go over with Steve to see if they were any good. Great guy and very nice SC. He will be missed.

That's awful news to start the week. I'll always remember Steve as the guy I was bugging at Carlisle, asking if he had the "Tempo brake upgrade" on his SC. :p The stock brakes looked so puny behind his 20s.

Great guy, he will definitely be missed.

This is the main reason guys like me need to show up and actively participate at meets. We have obviously lost a member of our family around here. I never had the chance to meet Steve, but I am in awe by the work he did on that car. That is one of the best looking SC's I have ever seen. My prayers go out to Steve's family and freinds. :(

This is so sad because he was the nicest guy you would ever meet. I first met Steve at the 1st Annual SC Shootout with him and his wife being a joy to talk with. I then got to see them again at WFC and the 2nd Annual SC Shootout. Steve was so nice and offered any help he could.

My condolences to his family.

I remember Steve at the shootout. I won the first round racing against him at the pro-tree race, and then he beat me on round two.

I had no idea Steve was even sick. I had the pleasure of meeting Steve and Elizabeth at the two Shootouts, and I also thought what genuinely nice people they were. It's no surprise that a common theme in this thread is that he was such a nice guy. The overall quality of our group has dropped a notch because of this loss.

I am deeply sorry to hear this, Elizabeth. My sincere condolences go out to you and your family.

I just found this..from my Uncle's funeral who past away on this last Christmas morning from brain cancer...
I thought it a fitting poem, as cancer has taken so many good people from us.
Author unknown..

God saw you were getting tired
and a cure was not to be.
So he put his arms around you
and whispered - Come with Me.

With tearful eyes
we watched you suffer,
and saw you fading away.
Although we loved you dearly,
we could not make you stay.

A golden heart stopped beating,
working hands were put to rest.
God broke our hearts
to prove to us,
He only takes the best.

Wow, I had to see the car to realize it was him. I met him last year at carlisle, and he was a REALLY nice guy that had a gorgeous car. I didn't get the feeling he was shooting bs just to fill the air, he made conversation with me which is hard with such a generation gap, me being only 20. Im glad that his sc brought as much joy to him as it did to me.

I may have met Steve at Carlisle too, but I only remember his car (I'm bad that way). But we talked more at the SC Shootout and after. He and his father drove the car out to Ohio to have me tune it in November and we had a long talk about his dream of having an SC performance and restoration shop and about using his car as a test bed for new products and ideas. Steve encouraged me not to give up on my endeavers to continue to raise the bar on performance expectations for SC's.

Considering we had just really met in October, I had a real sense that we were going to do some really great things together. Unfortunately Steve won't be a part of that now, but his wife has hinted that she is interested in keeping the SC and perhaps fulfilling at least part of that dream. Don't be surprised if at some point you see that same incredible silver and blue Supercoupe pull up to an SC meet with his wife, Elizabeth Rivers at the wheel. :)

God rest you, Steve.

You'll hear someone say, "he was so nice....would do anything for you...one of a kind, etc...." But seriously, Steve was one of the nicest, most generous and modest SCer's you would run across. He was usually the quiet one who would be listening attentively while XR7 Dave rants about his blower, or someone else is showing off their latest mod. And always smiling. Then you would ask about his car and "BAM" he had a lot of trick stuff going on and rarely bragged about it.

I never saw Steve discouraged or mad or unhappy....he was always in good spirits. And he always made you feel good. I really enjoyed the time we spent at WFC and both SC shootouts. Strangely enough we were able to race against each other and talk about it at both events. In that picture above where we are both sitting in the staging lanes I yelled over and asked him about his relatively slow run...something like, "You should easily be running 13's." And he replied with a big smile, "Ahhhh, I'm just having a great time."

I feel fortunate to have known Steve...and he will be missed. Both Steve and Elizabeth are very much apart of this community and I look forward to seeing Elizabeth and that blue SC at more events.

Steve, like Adam was taken from us at such an early age. They were a lot alike and different too. Seems like the people that have posted on here that had met him and knew him liked him a lot. I'm sure they would say they were lucky having known him, Adam too.

I didn't get to meet either of them, but in a way, I feel a sense of loss as well for our SC brothers. It would be great to have a "Rememberance Page" for Steve.

And if someone out there has the means of doing some decals as way to remember Steve and Adam. Any money made off of them could go to pay the expenses of making them and what's left over could go to his wife or a cancer research program.

Rest in peace, Steve.

Steve and I had talked in great lengths at the Carlisle show last year (04) and got along great. He was hanging out with all the guys from Jersey and everyone had the same impression, GREAT GUY!!!!!.

I am truely sad that he has been taken from us so soon in his life. Seems that the nicer you are the shorter your life. I guess the Big Guy is looking for a few good men himself to look over us.

My best wishes to his family and to all of us for a terrible loss to friends and the SC community.

We only found out on the 11th of Jan that Steve had any kind of cancer. Then on the 18th we found out that the cancer originated in his pancreas. Then we began our greatest challenge that was not meant to be. It was shorter than his last "quarter mile run".

I cannot thank you all enough for your kind words. We thought the same of each and every member we met.

I always used to say it was better that his first love was the car and not that of another woman, but I guess it's all relative.

If you remember, Steve's mum and dad were at the last Shootout and they also extend their sincere thanks. They felt so welcomed by the members they met that weekend. It was a bit overwhelming.

The thoughts of stickers and remembrances are wonderful. I would be more than willing to help finance the project if there is someone out there that has the expertise. My email is always open and don't think that I can let his last wish of being the fastest SC go with him. So with some "sound" advice on any future mods he might have wanted to make, I will be seeing you, so don't take us off the mailing list.

Again, God bless you all for your thoughts and words....

Hello Everybody,

So much to say about folks that I have met so few times!! Steve and Elizabeth are the most geniune and kindest people! I have met only hung out with Steve and his wife three times and what a great couple to talk to! I loved it when I could hear people laugh when I was always jokin around at the meets; and in the laughter I could hear that English accent chuckle in the midst of all it. Oh, what some great times! I am totally with what Micah said, Steve was at the meets having a blast, either if his car was runnin like a champ or like mine!!

My sincerest condolenses go out to the Whitley family and Elizabeth! Elizabeth, it is great that you are trying to fulfill Steve's dream of having a sweeter SC, his SC was already sweet! Hopefully, we can see you and the monster at another event in the future!!

Hang in there,

Just received an e-mail from the niece of Steve Whiteley and she wishes to thank us all for all our kind words and ways of remembering him. She also expressed happiness in the pics posted seeing that her uncle was enjoying himself and loving what he did.

Since she lives in England, she asked that I please on her behalf express her sincere thanks to everyone.......

Keep the pics and memories coming!!!!!!

I Met Steve At Carlisle In '04 And Immediately He Was A Friend To Everyone Around. His Car Was A Prime Example Of His Dedication, His Attitude Proof Of The Stand Up Individual That He Was. I Had Looked Forward To Seeing Him In '05, And Will Miss His Car And His Company. Anything That Can Be Done For His Family Please Let Us All Know And Let Them Know My Best Wishes And Sincerest Condolences Are With Them.

- On A Side Note, Its Great To See In A Time Like This How Much Our Small Community Can Come Together From Across The Country And Makes Me Even Prouder Of What We Have In This Club. .thanks To Everyone For This Thread And Everything Else Everyone Does.

I will never forget his face, his smile, his family must still really miss him. Not to mention his beatiful and fast Super Coupe, Its nice to see he is with us in memories. I'm sure he is watching or will be with us in spirit at many events to come. This is one time I'm short for words...Great picture!
God Bless his soul.....

My wife (good girl, huh!!!!), took the pic since I was in line for my award. She told me how she loved the color scheme on the car.

Just happened to come accross it while burning pics onto CD's.

Hi George,
I sent you a SASE a few weeks ago, but didn't mention quantity. Two would be great.
