Do you need to drop the oil pan to take the front(timing)cover off?
Can I take the cover off over a large pan to catch any leaking oil? How much oil leakage from the front cover may there be after draining the oil?
Tom

you DON'T need to remove the pan, and no worries about a pan underneath, no oil will fall out. Some coolant will probably leak out and fall intot he oil pan though, so best to change the oil after your done. PLus whnen scraping the old gasket off the block, cover up the opening to the oil pan, but again a oil change will help get anything out of the oil pan that may fall in.
