Not sure about factory installs, but of the aftermarket remote start systems I've seen, they are only available for cars with an automatic transmission.

I read somewhere that it is possible to use an remote start system that is made for an auto, onto a manual, but it's expensive, and involves alot of half-assed wiring, I'll get back to you on this.

A remote start will work on a 5-speed but you'd have to by-pass the clutch switch since you have to press the clutch in to start the car. Also, there's a saftey feature that can be hooked to your e-brake so the car can only be started when the e-brake is on. A "professional" shop probably won't do it because of the dangers... image remote starting a 5-speed while in gear that's had the clutch switch disabled. Next thing you know, you're car is through the back of the garage & half way through your neighbor's living room.

I have one on my 92 5 speed, not factory and it does not have the clutch switch jumped. There is actually a procedure to shut the car off in order to get the car started remotely afterwards. Before getting out of the car I have to hold the clutch and brake down then engage the emergencey brake(all in sequence) then push the start button on my car. I can then release the brake and clutch and turn the key off and get out of the car. At this point the motor is still running and once I am outside I push the start button again and it locks the car and shuts it off. It works pretty slick and makes it pretty much impossible to leave the car in gear when it is remotely started. If I don't do the procedure exactly it will not start.

I had mine installed at a stereo shop but unfortunately the remote doesn't have any names on it. I will take a look to see if I can find the paper work on it, I had it installed back in 1997 or 1998 cost then was around $250 installed. It also has a alarm built in, door unlock, and trunk release.

I've been installing these for years and have seen them all. The brand that I like the best is Autostart as we have very few problems with them initially and also months down the road. They make a standard specific model, which I use myself and works great.
I would recommend that you deal with a shop to buy one and also to install it. Ask to see some of their work, as poorly installed units will often cause you headaches. I see people buy them off of ebay and have them installed only to find out that something is missing or doesn't work at all. Also, many shops won't install something that they don't carry for that reason. And it always ends up costing you a lot more $$$ in the long run.

I have a prestige remote start on my 94 5-speed and it works great. I wired around the clutch switch and wired into the e-brake so the e-brake must be on in order to start the car. I tightened the e-brake cable so that it kills the car if the starter is engaged and I have it in gear. I try to make sure to never leave it in gear if I am going to start it using the remote. I also have a kill switch hooked up for the summer months or when valets drive it. It works great I recommend getting one if you can.
