O-ringed block question

I just tore down my engine to try to find the source of my coolant pressurization problem. The only thing that I can see that may be leaking combustion gasses is the seam of the steel o-rings in my block. There is a seam and black discoloration on both sides in each cylinder.

Are the o-rings supposed to have seams or should they be continuous? If so, how am I supposed to seal them?

Why aren't they? That's how they are done on pulling tractor's that can have up to 250 PSI. I know this because I watched my dad at the torch connecting them for a customer.

Different.

Yes Orings never seal 100%..But they are there for life...

I always use copper orings as they actually seal

Stainles steel doesnt squish!

Dead soft copper TIG welded together works nicely. ;)
Stainless is fine for cast iron block and heads but will notch Aluminum with time resulting in a leak.

So I should get copper o-rings?

or should I try to connect my stainless steel ones?

Also, would it help to put receiver grooves in the heads?

I'm planning to still use the Flatout racing rubber coated copper headgaskets.
