Rear hub

I have a 94 5 spd SC and I recently had a rear wheel bearing go bad. When I went to replace it I found a groove on the inside of the hub. The shop that pressed it for me said that it needed to be replaced. My friend thought that the hub could've originally been machined that way. I was wondering if anyone has had to replace a wheel bearing on the rear yet and had a chance to look at the inside of the hub where the bearing rides. I'd like to know if that groove is supposed to be there or not because I'd like to replace it

Here is a pic from our wheel bearing replacement article:

I'm confused on which "inside" you are referring to. The actual inside of the hub is splined to fit the half-shaft. The aluminum knuckle does have a machined ring to hold a large circlip to hold in the bearing. The bearing presses into the knuckle and then the hub presses in the bearing. If the outside face of the hub that presses into the bearing is worn or has grooves, then the hub is bad.
