Gas not responding 92 5-speed SC

Hi
I had a problem with rough idle. I changed the IAC (Idle air controller) and it is better - occasionally. I drove yesterday 130 miles without any problems..
Then today the check engine light went on again and when the light is on the engine is not responding to the gas - EXCEPT - when the clutch is on or the gear is in neutral.
So it could not be the gas sensor or gas itself because it revs freely. Could it be the cranksensor then? Does it make any sence as it revs freely when the clutch is on or the gears are in neutral? It could be driven when the check engine light is on but one have to accelerate very lightly and slowly.
I don´t drive it during winters so then the battery is off and when reconnected the computer must learn the idle again -but could it take so long..
Have had the bird since new and I´m not ready to give up yet because this is not a big problem -I think. I have the factory´s big shop manual but no direct answer for this one.
I would appreciate if anyone could give an advice or have had similar problems.
Thank you in advance:
Tomi

Sounds like the DIS module is going bad. It revs when the clutch is in because there isn't any load on the motor.

Thanks David -have thought that one too. Maybe I replace the DIS next.

I would try the MAF sensor before the DIS. If you unplug the MAF sensor and key the car up twice (not start but make the guages have power) and then shut it off and start it. This will send the processor into FMEM (Failure Mode Effects Management) mode. This was something that Ford did right. It will turn on the CE light but will give an accepted value of air to the MAF readings in the processor. If this works then the MAF SHOULD be bad. You can try to clean it with carb spray, but IT BETTER be DRY, I repeat BETTER be DRY when you reinstall it or you will have to get a new processor.

All right - Thank´s Chris. The car is already in my warm carage so I can try it easely.

If that is not it, I would be checking the flow of the exhaust. Does the car rev freely when in neutral or does it still stumble? I would also check fuel pressure. Along with what Dave said, these are the MAIN causes of the non revving engines. Good luck and keep us posted.
